Dreary is definitely bad. I loved Ballet Shoes (theatre mad kid) and as an adult ‘The Growing Summer’ about kids … grappling with a less easy life, I suppose. Less easy than they expected anyhow. But neither are dreary. I think some authors are just terrible at young adult books.
