Maybe Lansdowne 2.0 will have ploughs?
Maybe Lansdowne 2.0 will have ploughs?
The contempt the city has shown for this expensive and genuinely impressive piece of art it bought and proudly installed is just perfectly symbolic of how it treats both the public realm and its own investments.

Hey look, amalgamated #autowa got their way again. Guess which small areas contribute the most taxes to this area the size of a country?
If youβre wondering whether we still need these changes, a driver hit Robβs ghost bike THIS MORNING
Well that's it. Council has passed the Lansdowne 2.0 plan by a 15 to 10 vote.
At this point Ottawa feels less like a city and more like a taxpayer-funded vending machine for comfortable private interests.
#Ottawa #ottcity #Lansdowne
Ottawa just voted 15β10 for Lansdowne 2.0, a βrevitalizationβ that saddles taxpayers with decades of debt so OSEG can call it partnership.
The city gets the bill, OSEG gets the benefit.
A ridiculous decision that will define Ottawaβs future for generations. Shame on council.
#OttCity #Lansdowne2
Tremendous to hear some veteran Ottawa city councillors argue that Lansdowne 2.0 is needed because the previous overhaul that they voted for is crap.
Don't worry, you'll be able to get more memories. Public transit will be dead. The roads will be clogged. The Glebe will cry from all the noise. All those people are going to spill out onto the road, because there's no green space left around the condos.
It's just going to be so freaking good β₯οΈ
Lansdowne 2.0 passes 15-10.
As a group dedicated to financial transparency and smart investments in community infrastructure, we had concerns around the reporting process and special financial treatment given to Lansdowne 2.0, as well as the lack of tangible transit improvements.
@alex-is.online
A bad deal and a bad process. The devil is in the details and when Ottawans read the fine print, he smiles back. Landsdowne thus far has under-delivered, not once breaking even. Therefore we must now payout $17 million a year for the chance at revenue neutrality??
You would think the mayor was being ironic here when he says that we can't acquiesce to demands of wealthy sports owners, right before he says we need to be careful we don't lose the other wealthy sports owners in the same stadium π€£π€£

Rural and suburban wards:
AUSTERITY! SLASH SPENDING! CUT PROGRAMS! DONβT YOU DARE RAISE OUR TAXES!
Also rural and suburban wards:
YEE HAW, LETβS GAMBLE $500 MILLION ON THIS OSEG THING!

This graph below is the perfect encapsulation of this town.
What should be the city of #ottawa in red wants to be the city of Ottawa, and the rest in blue shouldnβt be the city of Ottawa and doesnβt want to be a city at all.
I know it's not surprising anymore, but it's still shocking to see US police beating people in the streets for...celebrating a world series win.
Still no justification:

Deamalgamation has to return to the mainstream political discussion in Ottawa.
This morning's rally at City Hall / Le rassemblement de ce matin Γ l'hΓ΄tel de ville
Lansdowne 2.0 is not what residents are telling us we need as a city. The cost is too much, the outcome too inadequate and uncertain, and the benefits accrue to too few. This morning's rally was energizing. We have an off-ramp; we should take it.
Very sad to see my uni (University of Nottingham) suspending its Music degree and all undergraduate courses in Modern Languages, on the basis that they have low uptake and the uni hasn't enough money to carry them.
Students will lose out, the uni will lose out, society loses out
...
I like this.
Regarding Prime Minister Carneyβs federal budget: I donβt pretend to fully know it, and there are elements that concern me, but if I were the NDP Iβd pledge to support it if a significant investment in urban public transit (nation-building, climate etc) was added, and if I were PM Carney Iβd agree.
Every city counsellor in Ottawa, who is in favour of Lansdowne needs to stand up and publicly state that in voting to support this project theyβre also in favour of wrecking womenβs pro hockey in Ottawa. Cause you canβt have it both ways. Your photos, photo
ops, tell a story
βFor years, facilities were designed around menβs schedules and menβs teams. Women were told to make do. And now, just as womenβs hockey has earned the right to think bigger, the city is planning to think smaller.β
Lansdowne 2.0 is a bad deal for Ottawa on so many fronts.
On the surface, this is great. But without adequate funding for university operating budgets - a provincial responsibility - this may actually result in more program cuts, not fewer.
Your greatest risk for accidentally killing or maiming someone is while youβre driving a vehicle. That risk increases the faster you drive. Preventing people driving faster, especially around schools and residential neighbourhoods, is a reasonable thing to do. Speed cameras do that effectively.
Just remember, the Liberals supported this too. If they think this will attract more researchers to Canada, they are smoking the dope they legalized. And once again, just like animal research, why is it @picardonhealth.bsky.social who needs to raise this publicly and not @u15ca.bsky.social
Itβs shocking that the NHS spends almost as much on clinical negligence claims related to maternity care as it does on maternity care itself - my piece for @theobserveruk.bsky.social on the crisis in maternity services and how to fix it observer.co.uk/news/nationa...
The more you learn about artificial βintelligenceβ the more you see how itβs a regurgitation of the culture itβs material is sourced from.
Reminds me of this from the US (Los Angeles) after last nightβs baseball - innocent bystanders affected by the tear gas police deployed against celebrating crowds (I havenβt seen any justification yet):
