Less than half of households eligible for the rent freezes were using the benefit in 2023, down from 56 percent in 2019. Lawmakers have proposed a package of reforms that would expand eligibility, and aim to boost participation. via @patrickspauster.com: citylimits.org/hochul-wants...
Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. Itβs always a matter of will not resources.
Remove the concentration camps. Build permanently affordable social housing instead.
My disabilities have been tested recently and it is clear I am not stable enough to make the trip w/o significant issues.

I literally can't do it.

Correction: I had been homeless before, but it was not a short* enough amount of time for the system to count it towards eligibility.
I could not get out of that apartment without calling various agencies and having full daily meltdowns on the phone.
I would be homeless, hospitalized, or dead if no one greenlit my EHV voucher.
I was severely ill.
My illness was the cause of my joblessness.
I had been homeless before, but not long enough before for the system to count it towards eligibility.
I was receiving threats to my life from my landlord.
For the record, despite the severity of my situation, I did not qualify for a CityFHEPs voucher.
I did and do not have a child.
I was not homeless.
I did not have deadly mold in my home.
No issues with the structural integrity of the building.

Iβm a social worker that works with people with disabilities & chronic illnesses, especially homeless New Yorkers. NYC desperately needs an expansion of CityFHEPβs. Shelters cannot keep up with the number of people becoming homeless & losing their jobs.
Housing vouchers save lives. Vouchers prevent people from living on our streets and subways. You cannot expect people to successfully recover from a chronic illness or substance use disorder if they donβt have a stable place to live.
Found this on Twitter from @itslayas.
I need people to read it.
I am a person with a housing voucher.
You CANNOT seek budgetary concessions on housing vouchers.
I am not exaggerating when I say I would not be alive without my voucher. Nor will I live long after you take it away from me.

When there is any doubt about voucher eligibility it causes a lot of mental anguish because you're waiting for someone to make a move on the stability of your life.
You're a monetary amount to be managed "realistically". But your reality is constantly being threatened.
Build housing, not concentration camps
The government can spend money on concentration camps but not on housing. It really is this obscene.
In 2015, I interned with @maketheroadny.bsky.social as part of their Worker Rights Program. Today, I was proud to stand with them as an Assemblymember to demand the passage of New York for All to end NY's collaboration with ICE.
In this moment of crisis, we must be BOLD. Β‘SΓ se puede!
Went to check the list and I was already following all of them π β€οΈ
On Tuesday night, we won our election by 57 points. On Wednesday morning, I traveled to the New York State Capitol to be sworn into office and seated as the Assemblymember for the 36th District.
I'll be back in Albany tomorrow to continue fighting for the people of Astoria and Long Island City.
Congratulations to @nynurses.bsky.social for reaching a tentative agreement. THIS IS THE POWER OF UNIONS!

I do. But I felt the need to push back anyway because you're expressing approval of his actions.
We're in charge. Too many peers forget that.

Genuine question: How much do you want affordable housing? How important do you think it is?

You can literally join. They have general meetings every month.

I live in a building FULL of dog owners. There are so many. My neighborhood boasts sidewalks full of half-picked-up dog shit.
No shade, but if I could live in a building that is full of cat owners and creative hags like myself, I'd be so happy. π₯Ή
