Don’t have the character limit here. Will add thoughts to my many, many unfinished substack drafts.
I’ll say this much, it’s very interesting that the covert bully is the protagonist played by the then-A list leading lady. Hollywood, assumedly then, expects women to root for her 🧐

Don’t go to university. Especially don‘t study the arts and humanities. I’m trying to unwind by watching ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ and instead involuntarily drafting a thesis about the psychological female dynamics in the movie

The views she has expressed are pro-women's rights and pro-reality. What does it tell you about society and the arts world that there are "consequences" for this? Also cancelling a review isn't "freedom of expression" as it isn't expressing anything. It's seeking to shut down engagement and shun.

Anatomy of a Vanishing Review
Why did Gutter magazine remove a Book of the Month review of Afterlife?
Scottish poetry culture has learned nothing from the hounding of Jenny Lindsay.
Polly Clark is a wonderful poet, and a fine novelist. Profohndly depressing that a publicly funded (by Creative Scotland) journal will not publish a positive review for the wrongthink of the reviewed author.

A Justified Assassination
In this week’s column, I reflect on the death of Ayatollah Khamenei—and why it may be a moment for cautious celebration.

Just wrote a Very Assertive email and will now spend the rest of the day wondering if I've over-egged the pudding or just feel I've over-egged the pudding because I am woman
(probably under-egged the pudding)

I can't speak for how bad things are in the USA but a meme depicting British law enforcement as competent/fair/proactive where it matters almost had me falling off my chair.

One of my favourite foodie Instagram channels referred to jacket potatoes as “Jacky P’s” so with a heavy heart I’ve reported the account.

I was putting a "tablespoon" of ranch dressing in my healthy chicken salad and that was already 66 calories

Something I’ve learned from my new calorie counting app is that I had a very skewed (ie optimistic) idea of what a tbsp was 🙃

Melania: Queen of camp
‘Despite the potentially high-octane subject matter, the general ambience of the film is calm verging on octogenarian.’ (Angela Weiss/AFP/Getty Images)
‘She is the epitome of Susan Sontag’s vision of camp: style over substance; aesthetics above morality; all filler no killer; heroically focusing on the exact positioning of table settings, while the world around her burns.’

I just had a bowl of Sainsburys Taste The Difference butternut squash soup. If the standard was set at a bowl of puréed orange cloth then I suppose I could detect a marginal difference.

Something I love about social media is you can banter with people whom you’ve never met like you are old friends and form a bond in seconds. The disembodied affection I feel for various mutuals us weird and yet very meaningful.

David and I have clashed bitterly in the past, because we both care about what we're doing. On this issue, however, he's absolutely in the right. Universities, and social science, depend on our ability to disagree with each other.

Someone has accused me of seeing all LGBTQ+ people as predators and, this being bollocks aside, all I can think about is Gareth Roberts's brilliant quip in his book 'Gay Shame' that describing an individual as a "LGBTQ+ person" is like calling a chair a chair-table-cow-horse-window 😂
