Our office's first "Particularly Dangerous Situation" RFW was issued today, unfortunately.
Goal here isn't fear, but widespread awareness and preparedness. Wildfire risk management requires a collective approach across all facets of society. Without it, these types of days are much more dangerous.

Even under lighter winds, this fire moves. Live fuel moistures below 40%, fire behavior in oakbrush almost indistinguishable from pinyon-juniper. Extreme drought conditions are evident.

Today's environment had the ingredients for deep pyroCb formation from the get-go. The final factor (clearing cloud cover) arrived late afternoon, and boom.

Tragic accident on the Million Dollar Highway derailed today's arrival in Meeker.
Detoured via Telluride, and captured some images of the Stoner Mesa fire which punched some pyroCu.
Hectic day of travel and weather support for 4 separate incidents.

En route to Meeker to support the emerging fires (Elk RBX, Lee, and Grease - the latter two of which have merged).
They've grown to ~16,000 acres in 2 days. Unfortunately, extreme drought and prolonged critical fire weather conditions through at least Friday will make for a very tough week ahead.
