I’ve never read it, but presumably there’s a reason why The Name of the Rose wasn’t just called Buddy

Perhaps a gold watch of American manufacture. But
Who ever heard of a man riding a watch down the road or bringing a sack of turf up to his house on the crossbar of a watch?
A round clear plastic dish on a wooden surface displays a piece of a chondrite meteorite on some white foam padding. The rock’s surface is flat where it was sawn, showing random brassy ‘blobs’ in a dark grainy matrix.
Solidified in zero gravity, near-zero Kelvin, in the early solar system about 4.6 million years ago when Earth was still forming. Shattered from an asteroid during an impact who knows when. One day it landed in Morocco and eventually it found me.

THE CURE ALBUMS THREAD
I think you might grow to love it if you stick with it. I love the blurry chaos of it now.
Excellent thread, thanks.
It’s good for the garden I hear
I was just kind of assuming that would be happening occasionally throughout his sentence.
People do what you pay them to do.
You pay corporate executives to make stock prices go up, not to make better products.
You pay politicians to get re-elected, not to govern well.
You pay reporters to get a bigger audience, not to tell the truth.
And so forth.
Be aware of what you pay people to do
My other favourite wild reading book is The Third Policeman by Flann O’Brien. Now I’m wondering if it was never published in his lifetime partly because of worries about its digressive, footnotey anti-structure.
His At Swim-Two-Birds was at least as wild but in yet another way. Genius
Lose yourself in this joyful little thread
When out on a dog walk, people who are too shy to acknowledge me, but greet Charlie like a valued neighbour.
Let’s talk about Smelt!
We want to make an always-on podcast channel made up of multiple short-run scripted comedy series. This is because making a new channel for every series is a huge barrier to getting traction and attention, so we want to build an audience of people willing to try new things.
Full moon through silhouetted willow branches in violet twilight
Summer tree in sunshine symmetrically framed because the photographer is standing in an architecturally interesting bandstand
A tree in full leaf perfectly framed by a railway arch filling the foreground of exactly the same size and curvature
A view up the trunk of a mature pine tree. The trunk is deeply textured and extends in perspective towards the radiating and interestingly curved branches above, through which a pale blue sky can be seen

I started using pedestrian crossings properly when I became a dad. We brought a book out at work partly because some people even get scared to drive. It’s a primal thing and quite lovely in a way.
I did a couple of times. I learned this:
1. if you laugh at Kevin, soon you become Kevin
2. Fall over. It’s fine, it’s soft. Trying not to fall over all the time is agony.
3. Don’t go skiiing anymore.

Tonight, Labour MPs voted to scrap the two child limit – a move that puts us on course to drive the biggest reduction of child poverty in a single Parliament.
The Tories and Reform UK voted against it.
Don’t let anyone tell you voting Labour doesn’t make a difference 🌹
