As rents skyrocket, & evictions soar, make sure you remember that Independent Ireland & Independent TDs literally copy-pasted 'amendments' from the landlord lobby for the Residential Tenancies Bill to make it even more pro-landlord!
Landlord DΓ‘il enacts pro-landlord legislation.

Genuine question: why do people on the left want the Taoiseach to describe the Iran attack as illegal? Like, what is the kind of political logic underpinning it? Trump obvs doesn't care about 'legal niceties' and Ireland is presumably geopolitically irrelevant
I was wondering about this too. Keeping units vacant to keep nominal rents high makes sense in short term maybe? But high vacancy levels/lower revenue would surely not be good in medium/long term? Most of these companies arent listed of course so we dont know much about them
Great piece here drawing a bunch of different experts from different sectors
The RTB still canβt compel landlords to lower rent if investigators spot illegal hikes. Changes to make it possible were to be included in a new law, when first announced. But they were dropped.
Interesting piece here from @mickbyrne.bsky.social on rent deregulation.
I try to set out as clearly as possible the case against rent deregulation, focusing on the politics of housing @pbresnihan.bsky.social @ciantocallaghan.bsky.social @davidmurphyrte.bsky.social @keithadams.bsky.social @maoiliosarey.bsky.social

Yes could well be alright
But the new rules don't effect existing tenancies so they will have zero impact on this landlord?
Just came across this myself. Have you seen this? researchonline.lse.ac.uk/id/eprint/13...
The Government has missed its target for new-build social housing in 2025 βΒ the construction target was 10,000, but Minister James Browne has told Labour's Conor Sheehan in the DΓ‘il this morning that the total construction figure was 9,089. @virginmedianews.bsky.social

It'll be very interesting to see how the Government reacts as the reality of rent increases become more obvious over the coming years.

"Housing shortages are regressive, hurting low-income tenants most, while areas that have added the most homes have not just seen improved affordability, but when rents have fallen, low-income tenants have reaped the largest rent declines."

Latest post looking at far right housing politics. Vox in Spain are especially interesting, their take brings together a lot of the key themes of populists.
