Self-publish and be scammed: Jon’s tale of heartbreak highlights boom in fraudsters using AI to supercharge book swindles New wave of publishing fraud mimics lonely hearts swindles of old – swapping promises of true love for the fantasy of literary acclaim. And the wooing process is now fully automated

Excellent new article about how AI is supercharging literary scams targeting writers in @theguardian.com. As Kelly Burke's deep-dive article shows, yes, the scammers are sadly convincing people to pay for their worthless marketing and publishing services. 1/

One of the now famous images of British servicemen manning a naval gun at Shoremead whilst wearing full pantomime drag. It's usually claimed to be an image that was banned by the government or somesuch nonsense, but there's actually a rich vein of propaganda photographs of servicemen carrying on with normal, humorous life in the middle of a war. That the Nazis were understood to be dead against this sort of stuff only added to its value.

So whilst the self-reported big manly men are accidentally closing a narrow shipping channel by having a big manly war and shouting big manly war things, a reminder of that time a bunch of lads who were much secure in their gender did it deliberately.

“I need to test your limiters. That means taking the safeties off. I’ll just get that back to normal. There. Feel better?”
“In your terms, yes.”
“I’ll need to explore… elsewhere now.”
Livesey’s smile broadened. “My main heat system, perhaps? Sure you wouldn’t also like to examine my solid state data dump area?”
Sudu laughed at the technical innuendos. “Sorry to disappoint, but I already looked down there using a remote scan. I might want to check out your fluid compression units.”
The same tired old string of poorly-chosen and slovenly-executed puns that accompanied every service. She always went through it, and sometimes they turned it into a little contest between them. Which could get the most cringe-worthy response out before the other caved in under the weight of mediocrity and crass double meaning? She was used to it, yet sick of it.
In turn, she longed for such moments. It was strange being someone like her, locked away from the normal passage of time. Her self wasn’t this humanoid body of metal, plastic, and synthetic skin, but a flow of information coursing through the neural pathways and processors in this shell. If she wanted, she could copy herself ten times over and inhabit ten bodies at once. Some androids had tried copying themselves more, and driven themselves insane through redundant data overload.

Young Sherlock Holmes was and still is a lot of fun for me, but probably only because it was the first of its type that I saw. The "Sherlock's origins" gambit is so overplayed it should be removed from the rules.

These folks who don't want copyright after the life of the author...motherfucker, who do you think is deprived of quality time when we write the damn books?

The sacrifice is not individual. That narrative is incorrect.

Families/beneficiaries should be compensated too.

Act like you know.

Kathleen Lonsdale (1903 – 1971) was an Irish crystallographer, pacifist, and prison reform activist. During her career she attained several firsts for female scientists, including being one of the first two women elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1945. #CelebratingWomen

Yes I am doing other stuff. Baldur's Gate 3 isn't consuming my entire life. This is only my third playthrough in a year and a bit. And I took a looooong break.

Speeeeaking of... I was wondering if my third playthrough as Abihail (a transman durge bard) would romance someone else compared to my OG playthrough, but I'm predictable.

I mean, not the first time. In the episode "Vault of Death", the bank employee literally calls Scott "Mr Tracy". That's a HUGE clanger.

I must stress, this is a campaign which has stopped the Government rushing through what tech lobbyists are asking for. We may or may not win, but sitting on our arses now makes one outcome more likely, doesn't it.

This is why I think the House of Lords should be kept around. Even if they can't actually stop stupid Commons decisions, they can loudly object.

You know those times. When you're trying a game everyone says is the absolute best. And you just find it frustrating, annoying, confusing, and tedious.
I have to ask. Are you saying it's the best honestly, or through rose-plastered glasses?
