Swans on a river in the morning mist and sunlight

Swans on a river in the morning mist and sunlight

Early morning on the River Avon. The river starts in Pewsey, flows through Salisbury and joins the sea at Christchurch Harbour in Dorset where it flows into the English Channel.

Five rivers in England are named Avon. Two flow through Wiltshire.

Silver pendant shaped like an autumn leaf

Silver pendant shaped like an autumn leaf

This week on #findsfriday we have a Medieval pendant in the form of an ivy leaf. The pendant is likely to have decorated costume as one of a series. The ivy leaf was often taken to signify constancy in the Middle Ages. It dates from the first half of the 15th Century, found in Urchfont in 2007.

Caen Hill is one of the longest continuous flight of locks in the country With 29 locks and a rise of 237 feet over two miles of the Kennet and Avon Canal. 16 locks form the steepest section and these are a scheduled monument and a must-do challenge for canal boat fans. #KennetAndAvonCanal

#ThrowbackThursday to July 2021.

Fascinating talk by Dr Phil Harding at The Salisbury Museum for Festival of Archaeology about probably the biggest piece of worked flint discovered in the south of England (16kg).

Found at West Kennet Farm palisaded enclosures, Avebury in 2009.
