Professors will recognize this kid as the student who didn't do the reading but still has very strong opinions about how it's all "bullshit," except this time he's not the callow student who's going to fail your course, he's the reviewer who's going to cancel your grant.

Everywhere will present challenges, but this is a wonderful place to be, and while the yen is weak, the life-style and cost of living outweigh many of those negatives. 2/n

now in haiku form:

Path moves slow and narrow,
Small market, quiet doors wait,
The echo of banzai (!) is heard, but is it?

The market for the humanities and social science is small, slow-moving (expect 6 to 12 months from application to decision), and likely shrinking. For jobs that don`t require Japanese ability, expect them to be glorified English teaching positions--not always, but it`s probable. (1/n)

Can AI Replace Social Science Researchers? No. No it can't. Come on, now.

This blog post by @davekarpf.bsky.social is really worth reading and reflecting upon.

The world isn’t moving away from the U.S. The U.S. is moving away from the world. The Guardian has posted a beautiful data journalism piece based on a report from Focaldata showing that since Donald Trump […]

There’s a hotline to report foreigners in Japanβ€”but so far the rule of law seems to be resilientβ€”as long as someone is the β€œright foreigner.”

I’m a big fan of civilization. Rule of law, public health, universities, science, all good things. Great stuff. It may not be β€˜politically correct’ to say this but I’m also a fan of what civilizations have done to idiot barbarian hordes who attempted to trample on those things.

Given that it was essentially the near-entire consensus to design stable and predictable political and economic institutions to avoid environments that led to WWI, post-war fumbles and follies, and then WWII, I think your opinion is a pretty good one.

Freedom University: The right-wing group rallying youth in South Korea Disgraced president Yoon Suk Yeol has become an unlikely poster boy for anti-government sentiment.

Pretty grim story here from Korea, but good to see the BBC covering it . . . .

The only time I felt in actual "danger" in all my work with non-state violence specialists in Korea was when they were politically oriented. Good reminder that "More people will die of bad politics than bad physics" (Einstein).

I am not 100% convinced I agree with this point. For much of the world, commerceβ€”rather than Jesus, is the reason for the seasonβ€”meaning the commercial association is at least consistent with the underlying purpose and rationale of K-pop. That is likely a superficial understanding of k-pop though.

Oxford University Has Failed Women Over Harassment Concerns, Staff Say The university has repeatedly been slow to act against male academics accused of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior, a Bloomberg investigation found.

I finally finished this article and it is a doozy, especially learning that one harrasser was hired "...despite knowing he had stood down as dean of the business school at Cornell University...following a personal relationship with a junior employee..."

Look around. The case for more, not less, liberal arts education - actual, real education in reading, writing, thinking, arguing, analyzing, & synthesizing by doing the actual hard work for which there is no substitute - is stronger than it’s ever been at any point in human history.

There was a time in our history when Black people had to carry freedom documents to prove their status. Today, Latinos are going through the same thing. Just wanted to put this out there for the Latinos for Trump.

Congratulations, y'all Black now.

The best thing about this World Series for me is that my neighbors and students are slowly starting to realize there is more than one team and one player in MLB. I wish the Los Angeles Ohtani`s well, but still....
