Using @chesdata.bsky.social and @cses.bsky.social data, we demonstrate the value of our multidimensional approach and its ability to better predict mass partisanship
We introduce the *effective dimensionality* of a political space, and use it to analyze multidimensional polarization
✅ Simple, intuitive, and easily extended to any type or number of dimensions
Main point 🎯
-- Dimensions can collapse into 1D polarization (see PT)
-- Dimensions can be orthogonal and produce 2D polarization (see NL)
🚨 Reinforcing vs. cross-cutting polarization have different consequences for democracy!
⚠️ Left vs. right polarization frequently underestimates party differences, especially on cultural issues
⚠️ Summing up individual polarization scores assumes dimensional independence
➡️ We need an alternative approach!
We argue that left vs. right polarization is ill-suited to capture contemporary party conflict
European party systems are complex, fragmented, and structured by multiple ideological divides (e.g., economic + cultural)
