This is great news. Finland to restore marshlands, which will (1) act as an natural barrier to deter a Russian invasion, (2) be a carbon sink to slow down climate change, (3) protect biodiversity. Superb!

Beliefs, evidence, and action towards the green energy transition by Mark Freeman, Ben Groom, Frikk Nesje, and Gernot Wagner

Some light Sunday reading to fill that post-Olympic void:

"Beliefs, evidence, and action towards the green energy transition" with Mark Freeman, @bengroom.bsky.social & @frikknesje.bsky.social

Updated working paper: gwagner.com/beliefs

TL;DR: both evidence & prior beliefs matter, a lot.

New EU carbon tariff pushes India toward green steel Europe’s pioneering tax on polluting imports presents India’s coal-reliant steelmakers with a choice: Decarbonize or risk losing customers.

Yes, EU CBAM pushing Indian steel producers toward greener production processes.

I only wish people would stop referring to #CBAM as a tariff. Tariffs treat foreign and domestic producers differently, while a CBAM levels the playing field. More like a VAT.

Hi Rob. A lot to say here. In short. UK ONS has natural capital accounts. The UN SEEA also. Some are just physical, others in monetary terms. The US Biden admin had a structure in place which has not yet been torn up, and may not be since it focusses on minerals, oil, forests and fish. Progress

Valuing natural capital and its distribution in the Congo Basin forests - Grantham Research Institute on climate change and the environment The authors of the study highlight the importance of understanding how natural capital is distributed across rightsholders β€” a key question for development policy and the design of natural capital finance in forested regions.

Our latest working paper provides new insights into the economic value of the Congo Basin forests and how the supply of this value is distributed across categories of rightsholders, thereby linking values to the different groups who make management decisions about the forest. www.lse.ac.uk/granth...

Listening to PM on BBC R4 today you would think that the Treasury Green Book is the source of all problems concerning levelling up, regional disparities of government investment and inequality writ large. The Green Book handles value for money. Not the lack of strategy by successive governments.
