Minister Poilievre expressed his desire to implement anti-union "right to work" legislation in 2012, at the same time that U.S. states such as Wisconsin and Michigan passed legislation that undermined unions.

"I am the first federal politician to make a dedicated push toward this goal," he said in an interview with The Toronto Star at the time.

Bruske: Poilievre loud on rhetoric, but silent on his real agenda

OTTAWA-With his lengthy anti-worker track record and history of cutting health care, Pierre Poilievre's election as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada is a concern for working families, warned Bea Bruske, President of the Canadian Labour Congress.

"Right to work" is the name for a policy designed to take away rights from working people. Backers of right to work laws claim that these laws protect workers against being forced to join a union. The reality is that federal law already makes it illegal to force someone to join a union.

The real purpose of right to work laws is to tilt the balance toward big corporations and further rig the system at the expense of working families.

These laws make it harder for working people to form unions and collectively bargain for better wages, benefits and working conditions.

Statement from Bea Bruske: Poilievre's Conservatives blocking priority bills for workers

December 14, 2023

OTTAWA-Bea Bruske, President of the Canadian Labour Congress, released the following statement:

"Canada's unions are outraged by the political games on display in Parliament this week as opposition leader Pierre Poilievre and his Conservative Party use procedural tactics to delay, derail, and ultimately block critical pieces of legislation designed to benefit workers across Canada. The Sustainable Jobs Act (Bill C-50) is aimed at shaping Canada's strategy to protect and create good, low-carbon jobs, while anti-scab Bill C-58 is focused on restoring fairness for workers in collective bargaining, yet the Conservatives are doing everything in their power to block these bills.

"promoting the interests of workers" is against core Con values.

NFL players should refuse to play the Super Bowl and citizens should boycott it. That US lives and breaths football! It would make much more of an impact than boycotting โ€œsoccerโ€ or the Olympics.
