Anti‐Predation and Size‐Dependent Gas Exchange Functions of Amazonian Architect Cicada Towers Clay towers built by cicada nymphs before metamorphosis are poorly understood. We experimentally show that towers of the Amazonian cicada Guyalna chlorogena reduce predation risk and exhibit size-dep...

this feels like it's implying that this is a new discovery, but we've known about Amazon mollies and whiptail lizards for a long time.

I got a zenfone 10 bc it was one of the only non-iphone smallish phones I could find, and it's already almost out of security updates but the new ones are too giant 😭

Slowly, Slowly, ‘Darwin’s Finches of the Snail World’ Return From Near Extinction

I'll never forget visiting Kewalo Marine Lab decades ago to give a seminar, after which Prof. Mike Hadfield showed me a room full of fridges full of endangered land snails-for some species I think the only ones left were in that room. So I loved this #EarthOptimism www.nytimes.com/2026/03/11/s...

Cirripedia cyprid larva. Barnacles (Cirripedia) are surprisingly crustaceans, and have 2 larval stages in the plankton: the nauplius and the cyprid.

A hand-drawn digital painting by the artist Dhiyanah Hassan of three garden eels on the ocean floor. The one in thr foreground is painted in more detail, sticking out from the sand and slightly bending its head towards streams of light depicted in a soft lilac tone, part of the dynamic shading of the piece. The other two are in the background, facing the opposite direction but similarly looking up at the light rays. The background is a mix of textured and blurry, wuth some grains of sand highlighted.

Bug (not a beetle, an actual bug) siting on a twig. The insect is large(ish) and round(ish) with a bright orange back edged with iridescent green. There are six big iridescent green blobs on the back, like a colourful but not very interpretable Rorschach test.

Just found this female Cotton/Hibiscus Harlequin Bug (Tectocoris diophthalma, Scutelleridae) chilling on a native Gardenia. Have now moved all the potted Hibiscus out of temptation's way.

Stunning insect. Females are orange with blue-green; males are blue-green with orange.

A macro photo of a cream-colored crab spider clinging to the tip of a cream-colored flower petal, against a blue sky background. The spider is far left in the frame; in the lower right the flower shows dark red and greenish-yellow stripes toward the petals' centers.

this feels short sighted to me. lots of paths besides "mathematician" need more math knowledge, like biologists, statisticians, engineers, contractors, etc. in school, kids won't yet know what jobs they'll pursue, so it makes more sense to give them the basis that will set them up well in any path.
