DEAR MISTER CAPOTE is written in tonally dead language perfectly appropriate to the voice of its serial killer narrator. It is exactly suited to its purpose and your brain goes numb after three or four pages.
His "Salinger" story "To Jerome, With Love and Kisses" is kind of a pisser though.

Jack Kerouac lived this problem when his comma-happy editor at Viking for ON THE ROAD imposed her will on his freewheeling text.

So Trump's modus operandi as a "businessman" was to run a company into the ground through incompetence and then declare bankruptcy, leaving others to suffer the financial harm. Now, though, the "business" is our country and every American will have to pick up the bills and live in the wreckage.

Well, since you put it that way, we don't mind being dead. What a relief.

Thank you for this remembrance. I was Larry's paperback publisher PACO'S STORY and CLOSE QUARTERS and I published BLACK VIRGIN MOUNTAIN at Doubleday . He was a terrific writer and great guy, a true working class hero.

Hoo boy. Remember how well it all worked out when we armed the Afghani people who became the Taliban to give the occupying Russians fits? What could possibly go wrong?

"The American writer . . . has his hands full in trying to understand, describe, and then make credible much of American reality. It stupefies, it sickens, it infuriates, and finally it is even a kind of embarrassment to one's meager imagination."- Philip Roth, "Writing American Fiction," 1963

This was the first book I ever took out of the Brooklyn Public Library on my "adult" library card. Hey, cavemen, looks cool!
It was . . . challenging for a 14-year-old, but I finished it and, hmmm, that gave me something to think about.

I spent forty-plus years at the book editing dodge, and I can tell you that I never -- and I mean NEVER -- asked my authors to rustle up quotes. That was my job and it would have been demeaning to make them do it. Only in certain cases would they do it themselves.

In my view the best sci-fi film (after 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY) ever made, although the original THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD gives it a run. A very smart update on THE TEMPEST -- Robby the Robot standing in for Caliban and Dr. Morbius for Prospero.

Thank you for writing this. I was a book editor for more than four decades and I knew Ann a bit and admired her more than a bit. It was and is a grand profession and, in my view, the care of writers and their work is at the very heart of it.

You could say that the United States is committing slow-motion suicide, but really, it isn't all that slow now. We have very little time -- Congress, nb. -- to come to our senses.
