I hope whatever the next controversy is (there always is) will sweep this away. Hopefully the react andys will shuffle on so the actual criticism can be heard properly.

But if it's gonna be like this the whole year, then... I don't even know man. It's just not worth the effort.

All this 'discourse' has highlighted for me is that actually playing the games we talk about is so much more important now, since people are just saying shit to either get a few dollars by being the village idiot,

or never cared in the first place but feel the social pressure to respond anyway.

I'm certainly not a blind glazer of Bungie, I am sceptical of the long term plan and what they intend to do.

But I can't agree that what's here is 'bad design' to be treated the same level as Concord or Highguard. It's neither of those at all.

And ARC Raiders didn't set a high bar either.

But talking about any of this is a chore. To be honest when Destiny released, the same energy was there too. I was among the people who didn't want an online only loot shooter riding the coat tails of Halo Reach.

Years later and that's completely changed... or has it?

Another thing is discovery.

The feeling of figuring out how the game works by experimenting and trying things feels like a lost art nowadays.

You get to internalise the knowledge through play rather than reading a tourist pamphlet. I might double check the keybinds, but I feel like I'm learning.

The fact that I don't have to use prox chat and can just use pings, so I can focus on the sounds and ambience.

Even for an extraction shooter, a genre I've never tapped into once, marathon has never felt like you could get soft-locked from having nothing.

I haven't felt this feeling from a multiplayer shooter in years. From the level design having immersive sim elements (even the codex entries have audio logs like System Shock/Bioshock),

to the guns feel great to use. The movement feels like I'm just playing Destiny or Halo again. It's familiar.

Been enjoying marathon between drawing breaks, and I often feel frustrated due to being unable to really talk about it without people saying:

- game bad, I am very intelligent
- It's not like the original (despite it having great respect for it)

One thing I'll say is this game is great at communicating what you did wrong in a fight.

The amount of times I could win a trade if I used the riot barricade to soak bullets THEN shoot them... I'd be a richer man.

Full day of marathon, found the drinkable cheeseburger, got my first blue shields that I will refuse to use until I get two.

I have my prox chat off, but had two REALLY good runs where we're all crouching and coordinating targets.

It's also a matter of perspective. I treat the idea of a perfect world the same as perfectionism in a craft; it's a good idea, but almost impossible to satisfy.

So to me there's always problems to solve and maintain, whereas some people will write and say "haha yes it's a nice place to be, sir".

Obviously conflict doesn't have to be about war and fighting, but there has to be a kind of friction somewhere.

Even a 'solved society' will still have problems 'somewhere', and there's lots of different ways to explore that. Even the people that coexist in said society will have problems.

Reminds me of the first season of Star Trek TNG, where a lot of that is about how the Federation is a utopia that's solved pretty much every societal problem... the main issue is that it was very boring television.

It lacked interpersonal drama; "conflict" in the broader sense.
