I don't usually post show promos but man, remember when Pat Sajak tried to be a talk show host for like five seconds? And the only memorable part was when Rush Limbaugh guest hosted and the audience heckled him so mercilessly he had to do the guest interview and final segment from an empty studio?
It just sticks out in my mind because
1. It's funny that he found the post at all, and
2. The idea to post old commercial screenshots on social media had clearly been rattling around in my head as far back as...man, almost ten years ago now, I think. π
Yeah you're probably right. Didn't (and still don't) see it as a big deal or anything, just got a chuckle out of it, that's all.
Years ago, back on the hellsite, I discovered that Jerry O'Connell namesearches when I posted (on my personal account with sub-200 followers) a screenshot of a Frosted Flakes commercial he did in his younger years with the caption "Oh hi, Jerry O'Connell!" and he liked it. π
And that's it for Candy Week! Hope you enjoyed it!
Oh and hey, sorry it was like, 80% chocolate. As it turns out, chocolate just kinda gets advertised a whole lot more than non-chocolate candy. Never really realized that before starting this account.
One of the best fight scenes ever committed to film, full stop.
Some background: This ad was part of a 1983 KFC campaign featuring various world champion athletes. Alongside Cynthia (who was a world champion martial artist at the time), there were also ads featuring Mark Richards (surfing) and Kurt Thomas (gymnastics), among others.
Nah, not really. This ad was part of a 1983 KFC campaign featuring various world champion athletes. Alongside Cynthia (who was a world champion martial artist at the time), there were also ads featuring Mark Richards (surfing) and Kurt Thomas (gymnastics), among others.
Excuse the interruption to Candy Week, but I've just been made aware that not only is it International Women's Day, it's also Cynthia Rothrock's birthday! So to celebrate, and in lieu of the originally scheduled post, here's pre-movie stardom Cynthia in an ad for KFC!
LRP: Man imagine if Rod Serling didn't smoke 3-4 packs a day. We could've had him for another ~30 years or so. Imagine having a voice as important as his, that was so dedicated to calling out racism and injustice, around during the Reagan years, or even the War on Terror years.
Rod Serling is probably the coolest guy of the 20th century. Looked cool, sounded cool, fought Nazis, hated John Wayne, wrote the screenplay for Planet of the Apes. Honestly dunks all the hell over any male influencer guy.
Going just a little past my usual cutoff date for this one, but folks, this is it. My #1 most-wanted discontinued food. My god I *loved* these things so much. Then they changed the recipe and they weren't as good anymore, then they disappeared forever.
I just want them back.
WE DID IT! Over $1,300 raised for Casa Marianella!!! Thank you all so much, this was a blast! See y'all again for next year's Amplify ATX day!
Alex is one half of @retropals.bsky.social and today he's doing a charity stream for Casa Marianella, an Austin-based shelter for immigrants and asylum seekers. It's a lot of fun for a good cause, come join in! www.twitch.tv/rescue_cat
