These women are leaders of the midwives movement in Southern Mexico. They're meeting with local health authorities to ensure that national health system changes result in real change in their communities. Here they are pictured with health officials from the regional government. They're meeting as a part of regional working groups to improve maternal health and support the work of traditional midwives, an essential source of care in rural communities.
These women, leaders of the midwives movement, are just a few of the Grassroots Warriors we work with in Southern Mexico. Their perseverance is an example for us all. #maternalhealth #grassrootschange

These women are standing in line for preventive health services, carrying their babies in slings. They live in rural communities in Southern Mexico where hospitals and doctors are far away. When the whole community comes together at a clinic it's a good opportunity for families to get health status monitoring, routine checkups and vaccines. GPA works with local organizations and health authorities to ensure these community health fairs reach those most in need.
Community health fairs are a lifeline for Indigenous communities, especially their women and children. Every child deserves the chance to grow up healthy, and every mother deserves access to the care she needs to keep her family thriving! #HealthEquity #MaternalHealth #CommunityHealth

Participants meet for a presentation on how to prevent maternal death in Indigenous communities in Chiapas, Mexico, where pregnant women face high levels of maternal mortality. Many maternal deaths in the region are preventable and due to root causes of lack of access to care and poverty.
Thanks to our colleagues at Alianza Kimon A'tel for a great session on Preventing Maternal Death. And a big thanks to the attendees, men and women from the Community Health Council in San Juan Cancuc, Chiapas, for your commitment to addressing maternal mortality! #MaternalHealth #RuralHealth

DoΓ±a Maria, an Indigenous midwife, has provided care to pregnant women for sixty years in the rural Indigenous community in Mexico where she lives.
Indigenous midwives from rural Indigenous communities in Mexico and Guatemala come together to share information about their work and the women they support. Traditional Indigenous midwives are the backbone of the communities where they work, where pregnant women often lack care because the hospital or health clinic is too far away.
DoΓ±a Maria sometimes travels long distances to reach the remote, rural communities in Southern Mexico where she provides care to pregnant women and those giving birth. Traditional midwives carry out an important function in these communities, providing needed maternal care and also passing on traditional knowledge and practices.

The cover of GPA's 2024 Impact Report shares a photo of a wise elder, a traditional Indigenous midwife who has served her Indigenous community in Mexico for over 60 years. She wears traditional Maya Indigenous dress and walks rugged paths on foot to attend to pregnant women living far from health centers and hospitals.
At GPA we work alongside Indigenous midwives and the women, children and communities in Mexico and Guatemala they serve. Every woman deserves quality, equitable & respectful maternal care.
