Cupid, Grown

In youth my leaf was smooth as a Ken doll’s. I was Cupid then,
saw myself through a hand mirror. No one can other you
quite like yourself. In the hot keen night, I would fold the thing
between my legs into the neck of a swan asleep. The god of love emasc-
ulated; I tried to give myself to men. Men at my father’s football club,
potent with Deep Heat’s musk, swung fat cocks around the showers,
soaping them the way a warrior whets his blade.
Romans wore amulets of the phallic divine, dangled tintinnabula
in doorways, from horses when they rode in battle. I too have offered
a pinch of flour, hung one around my own neck, hoping.
But now I’m Eros, virile, god of desireβ€”
playful in the mirror. I’ve untucked myself. Watch me
rattle my train of blisteringly coloured feathers.
I drink whiskey. I shave my chest. I put men on their knees.

I'm giddy and overjoyed to have won 1st prize in the Kathryn Bevis Memorial Prize. It was a privilege to be included on a shortlist packed with incredible writers, and I hope I get to read all of those poems at some point. Sincere thanks to the judges, I'm feeling very grateful.

The Kathryn Bevis Memorial Poetry Competition (1)
11 judges and 370 wonderful poems and many difficult decisions later we have chosen our winners and highly commended poems. First though, we would like to thank everyone who submitted and supported this project to remember our friend and poet Kathryn Bevis. We were delighted with the response. We would also like to thank The Writing School Online and The Alchemy Spoon for their support. Our four winners will be published in the next edition of The Alchemy Spoon and there will be an online event with readings from the winners. We are also pleased to have been able to donate Β£300 each to Jane Scarth House and Victoria's promise, two charities that supported Kathryn.
