It would have to be a genre you like, or you'd be buying a book you'd have no desire to read. But otherwise it seems do-able! 🤔
But anyway, if anyone's tried this or has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them! I write young adult & new adult fantasy, btw.
Maybe it's a crazy idea. But it seems like half the battle (the harder half!) is getting some sales momentum, getting reviews, etc. Maybe authors could boost each other up?
Question for the authors out there...have you ever tried getting a group together of authors from your genre, and do basically an exchange where they buy your book and you buy theirs? If so, was it successful?

I guess I'm a little bit of both. My world itself is created from scratch, as are the characters, some of the creatures/monsters, etc.
But I'm also a lover of more traditional fantasy, so my stories tend to also contain dwarves, elves, dragons, orcs...standard fantasy stuff with my spin on them.

Good advice! I'm 49 and also getting a late start, but I will hang in there and keep writing for sure. I love it.
I hear ya. It's my dream too, I saved up and took off work for six months, writing like mad. Trying to jump-start a writing career. I got a lot written and published, but I'm broke and back to a regular job next week. 🫤 Maybe someday...
Ohh wowww, that brings back some memories. I was a kid at the time, but I totally remember that back wall of romance novels at Walden Books. The fantasy section (where I spent all my time) was right by it.
Crazy. Ya that's kinda what I was getting at...are these problems out of our control more or less (ie-young people don't read as much), or issues that maybe as a community we could push back against? (ie-authors not getting a fair commission). Sounds like it has a lot of different causes.
Ah okay, interesting. Sigh.
Posts like this fascinate (and horrify) me, as a new author. What is the reason for this? And maybe you can't say, I don't want to get you in trouble. But are publishers or booksellers taking a bigger cut nowadays, or what has changed? Is it just that a lot less people are reading now?
I always boost posts that help draw back the curtain on how very little money most authors make.
