Once I read the book it reminded me of a lot of art where people's OCs take on some traits of recognizable characters - I think the artist stuck VERY close to the inspo pics when the characters in reality aren't exactly like the cover. Just my opinion though!

sadly they don't get much control - all contracts are different but most publishers only allow one veto of the art before they have to just go with one of the proposed versions :( when I first saw the cover art I said to a coworker "that's definitely that ship I love from arcane" and then I read it

In publishing, if the author doesn't provide specific aesthetic examples of what they want the characters to look like, the cover artist only gets a tiny, tiny excerpt of the book to create a whole cover from!! Giving an artist many ideas is essential to get a cover the author can stand behind 😭

I'm sure you can hc the characters as jayvik bc "in all timelines, in all possibilities..." but this author comes from original fandom groups and wouldn't monetize fanfic like that. they fiercely advocate for small artists and non-monetized fandom spaces and writers, artists, etc. just for context 🫶🏻

jayvik fandom im begging us to not jump to conclusions about this book. it's written by an indie nonbinary writer (who's been snubbed by big publishers) that champions actual artists and original trans/enby stories. the *aesthetic* for the cover was inspired by jv, it's not an AU or published fanfic

I read a ton of fanfic online & through paid subscriptions to artists and writers. I'm all for keeping fandom in its own lane w/out widespread monetization. But this book isn't doing that & it makes me sad to see jv fans getting upset w/out having engaged with it past what's posted online :(

The book is absolutely original - I read an advance copy and confirm that it's not monetized jayvik fanfic - the character design and associated art is what's been influenced. The author has written a lot of original trans and nonbinary characters across genres and this book is no different 💫
