Day 19: I havenβt quite finished the bodice because Iβve been making some face adjustments, specifically around the cheeks and lips. Much happier with the latter now but still have some jawline question marks to ponder moving forward.

Two rectangular shaped watercolor closeup landscapes surrounded by handwritten notes and one realistically painted blue damselfly. Top note-Aug 3, 2021, Schulenberg Prairie, 79 degrees- feels like 81, slight breeze. Sketch below shows a blue sky with puffy clouds and very tall stalks of yellow flowering prairie docks overlapping the sky with a line of trees in the distance at the bottom of the sketch. Note below sketch- Beautiful day! Monarchs, tiger swallowtails, pearl crescents, and damselflies kept me company. Loved the forest of towering prairie dock! Note-August 5, 2021, Wolf Road Prairie, 77 degrees (9:30am), sun with clouds Sketch is a variety of flowers on a green background. Purple stalks of liatris alternate with white globes of rattlesnake master and yellow goldenrod and prairie dock. Note below sketch- A dazzling array of blooms with lots of patterns and textures. Saw tiger swallowtail on liatris, monarchs on prairie dock and liatris, and bumblebees on rattlesnake master and showy tick trefoil.
Day 18 #ArtAdventCalendar -a page of my Illinois prairie nature journal, covering August 3-5, 2021.
I'm known for my detailed plants and insects but sometimes I like to zoom out and get some context on size and interactions with other plants.

Watercolor and ink sketches interspersed with handwritten notes. May 10, 2021, Nachusa Grasslands, Stone Barn Savannah, 57 degrees, sunny and still, saw a large Black and Gold bumblebee zooming thru the lupines. Sketch of 3 purple-magenta lupine flower stalks with 3 leaves. Two of the flower stalks and one of the leaves are painted, the others are just ink outlines. To the right is a Wild Hyacinth stalk, painted, with inked leaves and a realistic Bombus fervidus feeding on it. Below the lupines is a branch of Jacob's ladder flowers- light blue with magenta sepals, magenta stem and light green leaves. A head-on view of one flower is to the left. Notes-Saw small bumblebee gathering pollen. May 11, 2021 Schulenberg Prairie, 54 degrees, sun with clouds, breezy. To the left of the hyacinth- May 16, 2021, Schulenberg Prairie, 72 degrees, cloudy with breaks of sun, saw 3 different Bombus-impatiens, bimaculatus (on shooting stars), fervidus (on hyacinth) May 18, 70 degrees, cloudy and breezy, small bumblebee fed on white blue-eyed grass.
Day 9 #ArtAdventCalendar - left page of a 2 page spread of my Illinois prairie nature journal, featuring bumblebees and the flowers they like in early spring. May 10-18, 2021
I like painting the insects realistically in watercolor to contrast with the ink and watercolored plants.

An embroidery hoop showing an overhead view of the ocean on the right meeting the shore on the left. The brown rocks are made of different colour fabrics while the blue and white waves have different pieces of yarn sewn into the embroidery to add texture.
#ArtAdventCalendar Day 10
Mixed media embroidery of waves crashing onto the shore.
