@abc7news.bsky.social covered how our stormwater team built robot helpers to sample for contaminants in urban stormwater runoff! The scientists ("stormwater detectives") will use the data as clues about unidentified sources of chemicals flowing to the Bay π

When rainstorms give urban areas a bath, where does all the water go? For most of the Bay Area, it flows straight to San Francisco Bay and picks up contaminants along the way.

I stumbled on an @sfestuaryinstitute.bsky.social βState of the Estuaryβ report from 1992 and this is easily my favorite graphic. Birbs here. More birbs over there.
I've been at @sfestuaryinstitute.bsky.social for 4 years!
During this time I've become a hardcore estuary/wetland stan.
This Bay surprises me in the data every day! I love to look at it and marvel at its greatness and mystery.
At the end of the day, I continue to do it for the clams tho!
Chabot looks back on his time at SFEI with gratitude. βI was given the privilege of serving 50 brilliant, passionate, public interest scientists. There are now almost 100 of them. It was the best decade of my professional life.β

In his decade of service as executive director at the San Francisco Estuary Institute, Warner Chabot worked to build partnerships across agencies and elevate the Institute's science while maintaining what he called its "platinum reputation." @sfestuaryinstitute.bsky.social

Master's student Emet Levy in the Department of Design at San Francisco State University was inspired to animate some key findings from our San Francisco Bay Microplastics Study! Check it out.
What other studies would you like to see as animations?
We hit a milestone this November! Californians interested in how streams and wetlands are doing can now view more than 10,000 field assessments collected with the California Rapid Assessment Method (CRAM) on EcoAtlas, from big cities to remote corners of the state.

Thank you Warner Chabot, who recently retired from SFEI after 11 years of dedicated service as our executive director!
