The abstract text. Title: The pearls and perils of friendship as method in the margins (FaMM) in social psychiatric research Authors: Alke Wisselink, Gustaaf Bos, Lian van der Krieke and Richard Bruggeman. Abstract text: ‘Friendship as method’ (Tillmann-Healy, 2003) is a relatively unknown and unusual qualitative, ethnographic research approach, especially in academic psychiatry. Still, we drew on this inter-personal approach in prolonged encounter-based fieldwork, studying a) ‘the good life’ of people with psychosis susceptibility, and b) the associated, often complex, communications and collaborations, in psychiatric and supportive housing contexts in The Netherlands. The researcher purposefully acted less like a ‘regular’ researcher or a professional care worker, and more as a friend, aiming to account for the interlocutors’ isolated and marginalized positions. In line with a methodological paper we have written, we show on this poster the ‘Pearls’ and ‘Perils’ of approaching interlocutors in marginalized positions as a friend. And we present some lessons learned. This poster resonates with relevant ethical questions and concerns in qualitative research and (academic) psychiatry, such as reciprocity, intimacy and boundaries. We conclude that ‘Friendship as Method in the Margins’ (FaMM) requires reflexivity, courage to experiment, boundary-work, and an open, safe space of team supervision.

Haha, no, the children were playing and I intervened, and the 10 yo did not appreciate my intervention.
This morning, the 10-yo refused to go to school, after we quarreled about 'playing with a large screw driver'. Major emotional energy drain. It is hard to switch to writing. #PhdLife #Motherhood

Today we had a garden party for my birthday (and I also happen to be a woman) 🎂, and in the evening we watched 'The boy who harnassed the wind'. It is important to be aware of the possibility of scarcity (food, school), in our global northern sphere of often suffocating and decadent wealth.
