Geologist here. As I recall it, the main lynchpin in favor of plate tectonics was the discovery of the magnetic reversals in oceanic-crust rocks, which form a mirrored pattern on either side of the mid-ocean ridges.

I can vouch for the lack of cannibalism. I saw Emo’s show recently and although he absolutely killed, not a single person was eaten (or even gnawed upon).
