Blue Labour keeps using the word "fairness", yet keep pushing immigration reforms that lack any sort of fairness. Any movement that can invite my wife to the UK (as long as we spend a year apart first to follow the rules), but then decides we can't settle is not a movement I can have any part of.

How are the migration rules fair? My wife and I had to give up a year of our life together to follow the rules when I moved back here. Now you are changing them so we cannot settle. The rich get to skip all of that, and pay far less in visa fees than the poor? Is that fair?

Graphic with the following text: "1. International students who do not generate provider income should be exempt - including Erasmus+ participants following the UKโs association."
"2. Students studying SHAPE subjects must be eligible for levyfunded maintenance grants. Restricting subject eligibility harms UK economic growth and signals that disadvantaged students โdeserveโ fewer choices."
"We urge the government to reconsider the levy, engage with the sector, and pursue a sustainable funding model to safeguard higher education and research."
We are continuing to call for the government to withdraw the International Student Levy. This levy will add more financial pressure to a system under strain, threatening the UKโs research excellence, global reputation, and economic competitiveness.

I just sent an email to meet my MP about this. My MP seems sympathetic anyway, but really hope the government does change their mind on these cruel, hostile changes.

Mt St Helens in the distance, looking obliquely into the crater caused by the lateral blast in 1980. In the foreground is the hummocky terrain of the top of the debris avalanche deposits, with a small pond near the camera sitting in a depression between hummocks. There are many small shrubs and trees, mostly about 0.5โ2 m tall, that clearly are still fairly young. Between the larger shrubs is a lot of yellow grass, as this photo was taken in the height of summer.
I have some from 2017, if that helps show the transition. I suspect lots of volcanologists have similar photos though, as this was one of the mid-conference fieldtrips for IAVCEI when it was in Portland.

I've been going down a bit of a rabbit hole regarding lead 'pigs' for a piece of work I'm doing on silver.
Some were marked 'ex arg' ('of the silver mines') which suggests there may have been some de-silvering going on in Britain.

A screenshot of the CRU-TS national time series dashboard
New dashboard to visualise CRU-TS country averages (i.e. CRU-CY) for temperature, precipitation, humidity and drought area (using our scPDSI indicator).

A zoomed in look at 4 scientists working with the a lava fountain covering the entire background.
A very tall lava fountain with tiny dots (people) near the base. The image is a bit forced perspective and we are not as close as it looks

When my wife moved here, we gave up a year together to meet the requirements. We also paid relocation and visa costs (10ร those in other countries). We chose to do so because she was promised settlement in 5 years. Now that we've paid those costs, is it fair for the gov to change their end?

I agree, but I don't think LLMs are that software. And going back to the OP, putting an LLM in a LaTeX editor to find and insert citations into a paper as you are writing it without having to read the reference first, is not appropriateโฆ

In theory, there is nothing wrong with using some hypothetical AI search. In practice, LLMs will always give you an answer, even if they have to make it up. They are also bad at summarising; e.g., Apple turned off their LLM news summaries because they often stated the exact opposite of the article

Hey, just because we don't have beach weather, doesn't mean we don't have absolutely stunning beaches!

That's what I thought, although there may not be much sand there; a lot of the beaches along the south coast are pebbles and cobbles rather than sand.

I'm not sure people do think of sand in terms of the composition, as people are happy with black (iron oxides), green (olivine), and pink (coral) sands being sand. Using grain size to distinguish between gravel, sand, and mud comes intuitively to most people, even if they don't use the term

Photo from USGS
Kilauea erupted again yesterday in a fierce display. In only the 2nd time in 40 years, park officials closed the area due to the intensity.
Fountains were officially recorded at 500 m high, grapefruit size tephra were being ejected, and tephra fall was measured up to 20 miles away.
