Gertrude Stein's now almost 100yo statement: "Writing for the normal person is too complicated an activity to be indulged in automatically." ...appear to have aged interestingly in the age of generative LLMs

Wait. Is a "Silent Consonant" an oxymoron?
Escoffier's warnings against transforming dining from "a pleasurable occassion into an unnecessary chore" transfer easily into many other aspects of life thrse days. Ability to take pleasure in the basic and rudimentary elements provides a fundamental value that no production efficacy can replace
If it is really true that "you should not meet your heroes", then maybe you just picked the wrong heroes for the wrong reasons

Happy Phineas Gage Day.
On this day, in 1848, Phineas Gage involuntarily participated in one of the first human lesion experiments demonstrating the function of frontal lobes in impulse inhibition.
Today,we honor him and others (including animal subjects) and celebrate neuroscientific progress
Yes, the media should ask these questions. They don't. They can't. They lack the training and work inside rigid rules about how to capture attention and storytell. They have mantras for "what the public understands" that don't include science or data.
Politics runs on media, hence our world today.
- The vasodilatory effect is independent of IP3R2-mediated calcium signaling.
As mostly in science, this study poses further questions forwardly, which, hopefully, we will be able to contribute more on in the future :)
We used a combination of new optical tools and analytical approaches, and report that:
- Optogenetically elevating astrocytic cAMP induces arteriole dilation in anesthetized and awake mice.
- Mild opto-stimulation causing sensory-level cAMP elevations is sufficient to induce hyperemia.
paper alert: Our study on the role of astrocytic cAMP-levels on neurovascular coupling has been published and can be found here:

Vittani spearheaded the project, and I had the pleasure of joining, initially for computational purposes, but also with single-cell 2P exps
Our computational neuroscience meeting in August, 11-14th, is still open for registration, and we are happy to announce that with support of Neuroscience Academy Denmark, both registration and accomodation is now free of charge for sign-ups from NAD-affiliated institutions.

...well, sometimes, poetry also seems one of the last remaining sources of meaning amidst the madness

Harvard offering free courses on 'Constitution', 'U.S. public policies', 'Citizen politics', etc... to the general population is such a badass, clever response, and simultaneous commentary, to the current political farce

Ok, guess I'm already late to the party here... The statement seems self-evident in its core essence, though if we accept generation to include recombination and projection from smaller parts, the real interesting question becomes how much inference and prediction is possible from which small parts?
Come join us in Denmark for a fantastic week of theoretical and computational neuroscience!
A very danish morning:
On my way to buy my usual breadroll w/cheese, I met the owner of the cafe, who recognized and greeted me, apologized he had to run a short errand, but asked if I could just take the goods and check myself out at the register...
Which I did. Paid, and left before his return

Science is under threat in the US. @elife.bsky.social have commissioned a series of articles discussing the implications and what we can do. The first three articles are now live. More to follow:

Late night thought. We way too often measure the intelligence of an animal by their ability to learn our languages, gesticulations, and other means of communication... and maybe I missed it, but when did any human ever succeed in learning any of theirs?
Saw an excellent argument to convince any reachable climate change doubters: every insurance company employees climate experts and prices in climate risks. If it weren't real, other companies could ignore it and undercut them in price. They don't.
PS: and what joy it is to be able to stream favorite artists like Kashmir, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, etc..., without limitations again

People are out here trying to audit algorithms for fairness etc., and these homies are auditing entire social institutions using algorithms.
Now I see what Elon meant by AI is an existential risk, heβs just two steps ahead of us.
Not gonna wash away our problems, but with a little luck, it can help facilitate some useful shower-thoughts
In a time, where the fundamental values and social fabric we have taken for granted is being dismantled before our eyes, it can feel somewhat anchoring to just build something concrete.
So today, with help of my friends, we started expanding the bathroom to add a new shower cabin.
βWe now know that his prophecy misfired. And we discover that the true prophet was Dostoevsky. He prophesied the reign of the Grand Inquisitors and the triumph of force over justice.β
