Screenshot of first page of the PDF of the Research Article, Seasonal increase in blood serum osmolality reflects environmental harshness in the striped mouse: a decade-long field study, by Carsten Schradin, Aurelie Vinot, Neville Pillay, Antoine Stier and Lindelani Makuya. The publishing information (top line) states: © 2025. Published by The Company of Biologists | Journal of Experimental Biology (2025) 228, jeb251392. doi:10.1242/jeb.251392. The first sentence of the Abstract reads: 'Animals in arid environments must maintain water balance despite persistent drought, heat and low food availability'.

Here @linde-makuya.bsky.social shows that in the central place foragers bush Karoo rat, daily ranges are a very good estimate for home ranges.

Adaptation to harshness is fundamentally different from the adaptive stress response: Results from a 20 years long case study in African striped mice

Here we show - using long-term data of 12 years - that serum osmolality increases in striped mice in the dry season, and the harsher the dry season, the stronger the increase, indicating dehydration. @antoinestier.bsky.social @iphc-strasbourg.bsky.social

Overall, our findings indicate mutual tolerance between neighbours of this solitary species in relation to shared foraging grounds. This mutual tolerance may facilitate spatial overlap among kin and could represent a precursor to more complex cooperative behaviour.
