a chart showing high new EV sales (close to 100% for 2025) but slow change in usage, registration and emissions drops
Norway is at ~100% EVs for new sales, but 7 out of every 10km driven in 2024 was reliant on fossil fuels. Cars stick around for decades - so change is slow.
Protecting ppl from fossil fuel crises means EVs, yes, but *fast deep cuts* means huge $$ in public and active transport. Speed matters!
Cycling side-by-side isnβt bad behaviourβitβs human behaviour. Itβs how parents talk to their kids. How friends catch up. How communities form.
If bicycle infrastructure is too narrow for people to ride and talk together, the problem isnβt the people. Itβs the infrastructure.

"We used an AI to do this" is increasingly a way of saying, "We didn't want to do this in the first place and we don't care if it's done well."

the change in the river over my lifetime has been astonishing. still a long way to go, but progress is being made
I have watched 6 hours of a DOGE bro deposition. The whole thing, start to finish. It's a fascinating, and horrifying, look at the people who caused so much damage, didn't really achieve anything at all, while still being so sure they are right. Here's what they said: www.404media.co/i-watched-6-...
El NiΓ±o is coming, and it is shaping up to be a big one.
Over at The Climate Brink I've put together a compilation of the latest forecasts by different modeling groups. They suggest that we might see an event comparable in strength to what we saw in 2016: www.theclimatebrink....

it's that dumb billionaire's ai-generated solution of sending trucks across the empty quarter to get the oil flowing, only this time with arrows for the tanker ships to try sailing west off the map and coming back on the other side

i mean, we know from direct studies that AI mostly makes people about 20% less productive (because its just not very good at the vast majority of tasks the bosses want it used for), but it does spit out gibberish quickly which looks like productivity to idiots (e.g. bosses), so this makes sense
its so famously possible that i specifically teach about it in critical thinking classes. still...like, my gods people, maybe we should take steps to avoid it?
Its one thing to know the abyss is real, its another to stare into it. You know?
a composite image of the orion nebula i made, stacking 150+ 30-second exposures to really bring out the different densities of gases in the relatively enormous 13 lightyear radius of the thing. also, did a bit of practical camera magic to make the stars have a bit of diffraction spikiness. i dunno, i think it looks pretty good for my light polluted skies.

Americans drive a lot more than people in other rich countries.
If we didnβt drive so much, we wouldnβt die in so many crashes.
Itβs a simple point, but one that NHTSA, traffic engineers, and many road safety orgβs have yet to learn.
Me, in Bloomberg π§΅
An analogy:
Reducing deaths per mile driven is like reducing cancer deaths among smokers. Laudable, but an incomplete strategy.
Public health leaders strive to *reducing smoking,* not just treating smokers with cancer.
We should apply the same logic to road safety.

yeah. 'the fish rots from the head', as the saying goes.
weβve created a world where evil dipshits not even employed by governments will create propaganda for clicks.
