Be on the lookout for our new episode on GLP-1s. In it, we chat with Dr. Joseph Schacht from @cumedicalschool.bsky.social about what these compounds are, how they work, their potential to treat substance use, and what the state of the science is currently. Really great and balanced conversation.

That’s right. We use simulation to show this depends a bit on the population and specifics (eg multivariate versus single predictor) and contextualize in terms of clinical utility.

That said, yes we agree β€œthese factors alone are insufficient for clinically deployable prediction.”

No amount of alcohol is safe - at least for dementia risk The finding comes from data of more than 550,000 adults ages 56 to 72, as well as genetics information from 2.4 million study participants.

urther evidence illustrating that what we thought about alcohol was wrong:

▢️ there is no health benefit from low-levels of alcohol consumption

▢️ even use at low-levels increases your chances of cognitive impairment and dementia

It's a shame what is happening to VAs.

It is hard to envision a scenario where reducing alcohol use would not be seen as one important strategy for reducing chronic disease. Unless, of course,....there were other interests pushing back on this. $$$$ vs. population health?

Major report that tied moderate drinking to disease won’t be released, researchers say A major government study of alcohol's health effects was supposed to inform national dietary guidelines. Kennedy appears to be dismissing the study.

Short summary: this is...
"...yet another sign that health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will not add alcohol to his list of β€œMake America Healthy Again” priorities, despite robust evidence that heavy drinking is a major driver of disease and death in the U.S."

The numbers for #NIAAA are especially bleak. No new (Type 1) NIAAA awards posted on Reporter last week. With 4 weeks to go, there is an immense amount of ground to make up to ensure that novel alcohol research is supported and investigators can support their work, their staff and trainees.
