Most of Calgary in full denial of this, including those who make decisions about how are city grows, EVEN THOUGH we have decades of policy direction that sprawl keeps our taxes high, strains our infrastructure, compromises public health and so on and so forth

Suburbia wants car dependency mentality applied to inner city development. Each unit will become $75,000 more expensive for stalls that will be empty b/c ownership is low.

Blaming a lack of parking for an increase in road rage and using the term “war on cars” days after two Calgarians were killed while walking in marked crosswalks, all because the councillor opposes a development in Ward 8, is irresponsible.

I’ve been told to get married and have kids by so many people, who don’t realize that the biggest reason I haven’t done that, is because they fight endlessly against policies and practices that would make life affordable enough for me to do so…
Anecdotally, I don’t think we would have been able to have a baby if we lived in Toronto or Vancouver.

A lot of it is definitely a perception - not to say we shouldn’t be doing more to make transit an appealing option! It’s all about how we measure risk, experience consequences, the level of control we feel, etc. Daily riders seemed less concerned about safety than irregular users.
I hate working the weekends for the simple fact that we’re the forgotten ones. Transit is slow and unreliable. Local news, information and updates are tailored for people getting up later if at all. Yet we need to be where we’re supposed to in order to support everyone and everything around us.
CBC’s “This is Calgary” podcast, hosted by their traffic reporter, (re-)visits another Calgary car sewer and asks why does this place suck…
…while never a mention that it’s a car sewer or that people don’t like hanging out in car sewers.

The post I was quoting got removed, but this is the article saying "Alberta renters don’t need more ‘supply’ — they need non-market housing options”.
There’s *no* reason that advocacy for non-market housing should downplay or be put in opposition to the importance of overall supply.
Building enough homes for everyone takes every lever, not just one. The housing strategy has nearly 100 recommendations, and we gotta do all of them.
