i want to be optimistic!!!!!!
i want to be optimistic!!!!!!
canβt wait to see what new things!!
my question about existing units isβ¦. where???? lol
funds supports to help people get to housing but⦠no new housing.
wild articles today in @thestar.com about a $25m donation to deal w homelessness but says nothing about actually where the housing is.
300 people in five years is 60 a year and hundreds die every year. $25m?
also why do we have billionaires and millionaires?
people are more mad at visible homelessness than the reality than homelessness is even a thing people have to survive through
my friend found someone here yesterday: deceased, frozen.
if you knew
the sidewalk
that you tread on
the alley
that you rush past
the side door
through which you toss trash
was the deathbed of another
who took their last breath
alone
would you move different
if you knew?
Just come out of the locker room 5x5 and dare the IOC to stop you
Spoke w CBC alongside Isaac & Pastor Eddie abt the May closure of 5800 Yonge, a shelter for 200 ppl. Where is the housing/shelter spaces the City says they have? Combined w BLC respite & 545 Lakeshore closures, that's abt 500 people to be displaced.

The Feds want to βtighten bordersβ but more policing doesnβt actually stop migration. It just makes it more dangerous. It pushes people to hidden crossings, and heavier reliance on human smuggling. [end]
So yes, be hidden for 14 days but prove that you were hereβ¦.
IF you get caught within the 14 days, youβre sent back.
IF you were staying with someone during those 14 days, the person whoβs housed you risks criminal charges and/or heavy fines up to $1 million. [3/]
One exception to the STCA is the 14 day rule: if you cross into Canada and go undetected for 14 days, you can then submit a refugee claim and present yourself to authorities instead of being sent back under the STCA. BUT you also have to prove that you were in the country for the 14 days. [2/]
The Safe Third Country Agreement is a deal where US and Canada have deemed each other as βsafe countriesβ, so the idea is that refugees have to claim protection in the *FIRST* country they land in.
Besides the fact that America is not safe, there are many other glaring issues. [1/]
Chow hasn't been great (tf the cops get more money again), but I think alot about how she inherited a city "led" by austerity. Same with Harris' gvt. That's the thing about cuts: we might not see immediate impacts but the consequences are dire for years to come.
Today would have been Pierreβs birthday. He would have, should have, turned 38, but instead he died in a KFC bathroom.
The toxic drug supply has claimed the lives of so many people. We need more SCSβ & safe supply; instead the gvt has decimated them.

250 people are about to be displaced because of FIFA. The City says that they will be offered alternate spaces but where are said spaces? WHY are they not available NOW? The risk of cold-related injuries in March is very high. Where are people to go?
www.cp24.com/local/toront...
At a time when shelters are full, and winter respites and warming centres have been at over 100% capacity⦠instead of MORE spaces being made available, we are about to LOSE 250 spaces.
Where will everyone go? I dont know.
www.cbc.ca/player/play/...
i actually still donβt know who won the football game nor have i looked but it appears Bad Bunny swept!
how quickly everyone thought that little boy was Liam Ramos just told me that yall canβt tell latino boys apart. And couldnβt bother do quickly do some homework because once again, just wanna exploit emotions for your entertainment.
letβs do better please.
COMPLETELY INHUMANE.
take action to demand the City keep these warming centres open ALL WINTER.
New shelters:
Dufferin - 50 (youth)
Gerrard - 80 (adults)
Eglinton - 80 (adults)
Sheppard - 80 (women/kids)
Third St - 50 (seniors)
Wilson - 80 (adults)
That's 240 beds for adults, non seniors.
And won't even be open when they shutter the two shelters this spring.
he City is closing two shelters this spring, including 5800 Yonge: currently sheltering 410 people.
The City says they're prioritizing smaller shelters but there is NO NET GAIN OF BEDS:

this isnβt just abt one administration or entity. this is generations of policing that our Indigenous, Black, queer kin, have been screaming abt forever.
itβs not just abt abolish ICE (YES), but the entire system of policing that is disguised as βsafetyβ & βprotectionβ
(spoiler: theyβve been murdered forever by the state andβ¦. what?)
i am grateful we humanize renee (mom!), alex (VA nurse!), liam (an innocent child!)
AND if they did not work, did not have kids, not documented, were homeless, were substance users, had mental health barriers, had a βcriminalβ record, we should still damn straight be outraged.
Anyway, have things with you to offer care! The goal is to offer options as best as you can!
Also I said Metro Hall is a warming centre and that was a brainfart. Not true. My bad. Every year it's diff.
[end]
Also i am very unclear on what city outreach teams are doing. Are you bringing warm stuff? Are you driving people to warm spaces? Where are said warm spaces?
[4/]
The City says call the city if you see someone outside: PLEASE DO NOT ADD TO STATE SURVEILLANCE. If you're worried about someone's medical condition, sure, call for an ambulance, but do not be calling just to report the presence of a homeless person. Let people live. [3/]
This is a wider conversation about "choice", really - and why someone may feel better outside than in a congregate setting.
[2/]
Spoke to 1010 Radio yesterday about the cold.
Thoughts:
* Jim wonders abt forcing people off the street in light of this dangerous weather. Forcing people is not recognizing that ppl outside make the choices they need for themselves & deserve dignity of choice

the God iβve come to encounter in Scripture doesnβt seem to care if your 4min How Great is our God or 4point sermon or even tithing & prayer is disrupted
Seems to have much to say abt how the vulnerable are treated.
Isaiah 58 for one.
