This is the beautiful thing about history. We are never alone, because whatever horrors or sadnesses or joys we feel are shared with countless other people across time.

Depending on the type of scholarly work β€” literature, astronomy, medicine etc β€” such a text would often have a colophon, which is like a signature section that would give the name of the scribe or scholar, their lineage, that sort of thing

That’s a great question (which I totally failed to give context for in the thread, with apologies)! It’s a work of literature, something like a β€œdialogue poem”, and it would have been made likely in one sitting by a single trained scribe, or advanced scribe-in-training

Headlines are systematically dehumanizing the Lebanese people who are being killed, injured, and displaced. But these are the types of people that Israel is killing with its escalation in Lebanon-- a priest serving his parishioners to his dying breath on the land he calls home.

Reminds me of the quote:

Tell me, brave captain, why are the wicked so strong? / How do the angels get to sleep when the devil leaves the porch light on?"

From Tom Waits’ 1980 song "Mr. Siegal". Cribbed from the movie, "Abandon Ship", aka "Seven Waves From Today."

"– Why are you so gloomy about many things?

– Why is not one, at his god, speaking justice; being a supporter of truth; but is settled just like a wicked person?"

Extremely apt post. If you feel like the second person in that dialogue, you're not alone, and haven't been for millennia

And so we write to brilliant postgraduate students from Sudan, withdrawing the offers and scholarships they won in open competition with the best in the world. A sad day for the University of Oxford.

As War Comes to Gulf States, Migrant Workers Pay the Highest Price

"Leaving is a choice that is typically not available to the lowest-paid migrants, who are bound by employment contracts, debts or family obligations. And whatever the risks they face in the Gulf countries ... they keep coming, because the remittances they send home are a lifeline."
