That is definitely the primary angle I'm looking at, but I do want to also make it feel worth it outside of the bare goodness of the heart lol

I would probably also use it to kind of keep myself from spamming WIP stuff on BlueSky in particular - I like sharing my blender and worldbuilding stuff, but I really don't like how crammed it makes the media tab here and I don't really care to put it on FA.

That said like, especially as I start to make some headway on owed work, I'm gonna be talking about this more. I would really appreciate some input, particularly because I am not very heavy on the marketing yourself thing but I do think it would be helpful even if it only ends up paying for software

That said I also don't wanna lock anything forever behind a paywall that I would otherwise just publish anyway. I'll probably put all my old unpublished or deleted work in an archive at the low tier, maybe include kink art at the middle. And just a posting delay of some kind for general work.

A huge thing I've realized recently is that if I'm GOING to have to monetize my work to make ends meet I unambiguously need to reconcile the gap between my disability and my work process. I still wanna take commission for more specific projects, but need to do it in very small batches (1-2 clients).

And then on the higher end maybe one or two portraits where I just pick from a separate pool, take an afternoon or two and just knock out two self-directed portraits the way I've done for icon demos in the past to push commission forms:

One thing I am strongly considering is having like a sketch pool where I just use people's characters for deliberate practice on a rolling basis, think this sort of level:

One of the things that has stopped me from making one, historically, has been knowing that I would not be able to run one the way a lot of other people do. As I wrap up on commissions I currently owe, I want to move toward a relationship with commissions that is less financially driven.

That said if I were to concede to point on the verbiage, I still think you'd be foolish to say that Gambling Disorder doesn't exist. It very clearly does, even if we don't know entirely how it works yet or if it's "addictive" per se.

But we have to address the institutions AND the disorder.

It's quite obvious this is an area where the science and the public understanding are roughly on the same page, that being that it's clearly SOMETHING.

I'm just not sure it's productive to place the entire issue on the institutions, and IMHO "addiction" is not a word that is inherently derogatory.

Though again, like a) thanks for your reply because I think it's certainly an important discourse and didn't wanna suggest otherwise; but also b) just because the locus of control for a condition is external doesn't mean it's non-medical in nature, I think.

So like, and I'm really sorry this got so long, there's no addressing Gambling Disorder without addressing its causes/morbidity both systemically AND on the research and clinical level.

I'm just not sure the Disorder/Addiction verbiage conversation represents a distinction with difference here.

Moreover there's a qualitative difference between a scam in gambling - like, a rigged game or program - and the odds simply being unfair. The diagnostic criteria and studies consistently find that people with the disorder are UNABLE to stop and suffer chronic, long term patterns and remissions.

Not to imply that it's necessarily someone's own fault if they fall for a scam - scams inherently target by self-selecting vulnerable people - but even if we're gonna go that route here I don't think Gambling Disorder/Addiction is in any way really at odds with the "scam" assessment.

Everyone is vulnerable to predatory gambling institutions, but it's widely agreed, at least for now, that not everybody is equally vulnerable to them. It's not just "a scam".

Both of the ICD and the DSM classify it under substance use and other addiction.

It walks, quacks, responds to medication, and while it very well may be something else I think it's unproductive to assess it as non-medical/pathological even if we're doing so in the interest of ->

Obviously we can have a whole discussion on the rigor of the DSM, but compare the ICD-11 criteria:

Of note, which I was not aware of when I originally replied to Patricia, the DSM specifically calls it "Gambling Disorder" and not "Gambling Addiction.

I imagine that this is because a) the category addresses the overlap and b) the change was made with this conversation's concerns in mind.
