This isnβt just about platform policy. While I recognise that there is a need for media to accurately report news, and we should not be ignorant to what is happening in the world, we should also have protections against the witnessing of graphic and traumatising video footage.
Where are the trigger warnings, the opt-out mechanisms, or basic safeguards?
Why are social media companies not doing more to protect users from this kind of traumatic exposure? Why is there no option to disable the auto-next feature on many social media platforms? Why are algorithms pushing graphic violence into feeds that have no relevance to the content being viewed?
The same was true of the video footage of the murder of Iryna Zarutska on a train in Charlotte. These videos were inserted into unrelated reel chains, bypassing any content warnings, and auto-played without consent.
Yesterday, I was confronted with graphic footage of Charlie Kirkβs murder circulating widely on social media reels, without warning, without context, and without any opportunity to look away before the violence was shown.
I fear that as a society we are becoming desensitised to the horrors occurring in front of us.
For the avoidance of doubt, regardless of what differences I may have with someone in my political views, there is no place for violence against those whose views we may disagree with, whether left-wing, right-wing, or centre.
The assassination of Charlie Kirk is a shocking and evil moment and I condemn it and all political violence in the strongest terms. As political violence becomes more common place in democratic countries, it is deeply worrying to see that there are those celebrating this death.
This should be a surprise to no one who has ever suffered the misfortune of having to work with HMCTS.
