That’s what makes a good retrofit. But if the club is really that fragile that it’s whole approach to recruitment would be thrown off by one bad signing (Spurs and all PL clubs have made dozens of terrible signings through their history) then we really are f*cked.

Look no one is saying we have a squad that competes toe to toe with the current A*sen*l squad. But nor do we have a squad that should get locked in a relegation battle with the likes of Forest, West Ham & Leeds. Other than Liverpool-away all of our next 7 games are winnable. Let’s go.

After reading that Frank (and presumably Vinai) idolizes Arteta’s brand of attrition & set piece football, would you describe Arteta-ball as a more successful variation of Frank-ball, or something else entirely?

The sad thing is I don’t think we were in need of course correction. After the Europa League final we had a lot of belief. Starting the new season with Ange, a healthy back line, and a few upgrades in other positions, it could have been a fun third season. Instead it was dour and soul destroying.

Yup. Point being it was that attitude and negative approach that put us in this situation. It’s a relegation fight of our own making.

You did indeed put your finger on it. Frank saw us as a team that needed saving from relegation, and I believe Vinai and Johan either gave him that remit or at least drank the KoolAid. It was insulting to us as a club and a complete rewrite of last season.

Out of interest where would we rank without Romero?

I struggle to believe this is just a case of a depleted or substandard squad. We may not have the squad to compete with Arsenal & City but we should be able to compete with 70% of the league.

At the time I was sorry to see him go but confident trophies would become a top priority - we would ultimately propel to greater heights.

Sadly now it’s clear we were punching above our weight, Kane & Son papered over a lot of cracks, and mid-table with a once-a-decade trophy is as good as it gets.

As bad as the results have been there are signs of life in this team. First half v Sunderland and second half at Bournemouth at least we saw attacking intent - we saw the same when they were down a goal and a man against Liverpool.

We just need to do it more consistently and results will come.

These stats reflect what my eyes told me. We at least created more of an attacking threat than recent games, but went into our shells in the last 20 minutes and let Sunderland back into the game. None of our subs worked.

But if (as I fear) we end up sacking Frank before the end of the season no doubt his successor will lament lack of goalscorers in the squad while Palace finish above us in the table.

My point was more that Ange managed to turn Johnson into a legitimate goalscorer which we mostly let rot on the bench for half a season while we struggled to score goals. If we manage to sign an upgrade winger and start actually showing offensive intent I’ll have no complaint.

Haven’t listened to the podcast yet but I was surprised how positive your article was about the sale. We took a pacy young winger, turned him into our top & trophy winning goalscorer, before selling him at a loss. And what are we struggling to do above all else this season? Score goals. 😤
