Hmm, saving WIPs for after...that might be the move

This is part of the reason I don't go too hard on my work. I try to do enough detail to get the point across and leave the rest to the lord almighty

So a combination of curiosity about the work in progress, dulled impact from the full piece, and "showing too much of the sauce" can really limit your initial engagement wave.

(I want to again emphasize some of you have amazing sketches that you overcook sometimes, don't be your own worst enemy!)

Another issue is a WIP that's too far along and seems like a finished piece. On social media you have a limited allotment of the attention economy and its possible to spend it prematurely on a WIP.

Take this Witch Sha WIP. She was pretty much done, so its no shock the final pic was close in likes.

So like, a sketch of a hand tugging on a collar against a blank background will convey a strong and immediate response.

But the finished image with a busy background, full rendering and lighting may dampen that impact. Its important to try to keep the "hook" of your piece as strong as possible.

On social media, initial impact is everything. People tend to respond to simple, easily digestible scenarios.

I'm not saying that's a GOOD thing. I actually despise the way these sites push artist towards fast and simple engagement bait. But them's the breaks.

I think there's a few reasons for this.

1. WIPs are often cropped (especially if NSFW) which naturally baits engagement due to curiosity and the allure of the unknown.

2. Sometimes the finished piece is not impactful as the WIP. Sometimes rendering, color, shading can ruin the tone of a piece.
