They have turned UC around after years of issues with leadership, governance, and financial mismanagement. That's why @nteunion.bsky.social members are campaigning to ensure they get the recognition they deserve. โ

Staff at ANU need fair pay, secure jobs, safe workloads and workplaces that put staff wellbeing first. By uniting with purpose, we can make our universities better places to work and study. nteu.info/anusurvey
Results are in: #ANU ranks 5th worst in terms of psychosocial risk among universities. #UniCanberra doesn't fare much better.
@nteunion.bsky.social endorses recommendations including continuing monitoring & more funding to stop job losses & excessive workloads.
Big concerns on redundancy & org change in #UniCanberra Bargaining as we push for better job security.
@nteunion.bsky.social members also deserve a pay rise & can't wait until January!

Today is a National Day of Mourning for victims of the Bondi terrorist attack. NTEU mourns the lives lost and we stand with all those grieving this horrific act of violence.
Difficult to have reliable estimates, but clearly protestor deaths in the thousands. Solidarity to those protesting and striking in Iran.
Here is the @ituc.bsky.social statement of 8 Jan, though events appear to be moving quickly.

2025 proved what we can achieve together.

A world where force is the only determinant of right and wrong, and where international law and norms are only ever used as a fig leaf, makes all of us less safe.
The breakdown of the "rules-based order" should concern everyone who believes in democracy.
Back to the US - if it is willing to overlook international law so easily, and to apparently abandon allies as it has Ukraine, what confidence can Australia have? Where does that leave AUKUS?
I have no sympathy for Russia's government and have spoken against their illegal invasion of Ukraine.
But we should also ask "Why is it only bad when Russia does it?"
A reminder that nobody batted an eyelid when the #ANU in 2022 decided to "suspend all links with institutions in Russia, indefinitely and with immediate effect." In fact, now ANU is being criticised for not academically boycotting Russia enough!
Some have asked why people protest against Israel but not against Iran's government.
(1) We, rightfully, expect more of those purporting to be Western liberal democracies.
(2) There is no reason to protest if our Government already has the policy we'd advocate.
It's a time when democracy should be championed. The Iranian situation offers the best chance for democracy since the revolution against the Shah.
Our government has condemned repression of peaceful protest, at the same time as authorities crack down on peaceful protest here.
"History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme."
In the 1930s, the League of Nations (and the world) failed to respond to Abyssinia and Manchuria. I hope that the UN and ICC are not at a similar nadir.
And I hope it doesn't lead somewhere similar.
Both Israel and the US have undermined international institutions, like the United Nations, over a period of time. Trump has sanctioned the International Criminal Court.
We know the disastrous legacy of Iraq - the creation of ISIS.
But the trashing of the rule of law in relation to international law by Israel and the United States is arguably worse.
"History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme."
What the United States has done in Venezuela - ostensibly as part of the 'war on drugs', now nakedly as 'war for oil' - is clearly reminiscent of toppling Saddam Hussein. This includes the role the US will apparently now play.
2026 is shaping up to be one of the most dangerous years in recent times.
When Western liberal democracies are those championing the "might is right" version of international politics, rather than multilateral diplomacy, we are in trouble. ๐งต
Well done to the @nteunion.bsky.social bargaining team on your efforts at #UniCanberra this year. Looking forward to a big 2026!
Not providing standalone reproductive health leave seems like a weird hill to die on... We'll keep pushing! โ
It can be hard to know what to say in times like this, or whether to say anything at all.
To @nteunion.bsky.social members, look to your union values for guidance.
And to Australia's Jewish community, nobody deserves to feel as you do now, and you have my support.
The Federal Government has an opportunity to start things off by making #ANU an exemplar of good governance. Unlike other universities governed under state or territory legislation, the ANU Act is at the Commonwealth level.
