@mpidr.bsky.social + Helga de Valk examined the limitations of theoretical and methodological approaches to understanding gender-specific migration trends. www.demogr.mpg.de/go/predictin...
We hope this work initiates more critical perspectives on statistical methods for migration research ๐
We also break down the main parts of globalization of migration by gender and show that thinking about gender inequality in the places people are coming from and going to is important to understand migration better, even on an aggregate level ๐
We show that gravity-type models cannot predict gender-imbalanced migration flows well. This is partly because there is no theoretical framework that explains the gender composition of migration flows. But also not enough gender-disaggregated data to train models well ๐คทโโ๏ธ
