Icon of characters from Pape and Popoโs Memories with multicolored background
Multicolored background with web browser window popup that reads, โThe first Korean digital comic to use the vertical โwebtoonโ layout was Sim Seung-hyunโs Pape and Popoโs Memories in 2002. Comics creators who published their works on internet portal sites such as N4 and Comics Today used to create horizontal pages designed to fit the landscape layout of a computer screen. Once the vertical layout appeared, however, it was quickly adopted by artists and is now famously the format preferred by Korean webtoons.
Weโre continuing our celebration of the rich history of Korean media! Today weโre focusing on the evolution of digital comics and the introduction of the vertical โwebtoonโ layout style.
