the president does not actually have the power to fire a university president or a museum director, but if elites simply roll over under pressure, then effectively he does

Oof, I hadn't heard this until now. What a loss.

OMG, I listened to this as a tender young sprout, too! My fav was "Ladies First," which turned out to be wise words regarding the danger of privilege (maybe not when the tigers are debating whom to eat first?).
Any suggestions? I'm thinking of a box of shelf-stable things like protein bars, snacks, or dried fruit, as well as maybe calming stuff (Zen coloring books?). A staffer proposed a pillow fort, which I gotta say would work for me.
After not one but two shelter-in-place events this week (which came after a shooting at an area grocery store), I am now thinking about what sort of food & comfort items to stock in our offices. We have few windows and are behind a locked door, so it is a good place for students &c. in a crisis.
Join us for our upcoming virtual #workshop, "Book, Number, Graph: Getting Started with Text Analysis" with Brandon Walsh, PhD (University of Virginia Library) on March 31, from 10:00am-11:30am CT. Spaces limited, RSVP at: bit.ly/booknumbergr... #usLdh #digitalhumanities #archives #textanalysis
This is what social media was made for.
Meanwhile, in Charlottesville... remember the fuss over those big statue things?
Another good resource is Syracuse University Library's Numeric Data Resources page, which includes a list of U.S. gov't data preservation/rescue initiatives.
Hey, kid! Wanna check out some data that was created, maintained, and made available for the benefit of and use by the public? First hit is free! (OK, fine, it's all free.)
We created this in the early days of Bsky (last week). If you know an org missing, let us know as there have been many new accounts lately. Let's all raise a cup to the Bsky admins.

Welcome to Bluesky, #UVA Library!
Just to be clear, the blurb implied that DeepSeek had no information but could talk about something else (we when asked about Tiananmen). It appeared that the AI gave the information and then removed the response. This did not happen when we asked it to describe the Unite the Right movement.
Interesting postscript: I am in a meeting talking about AI, and we are looking at a live session of DeepSeek. We asked it, "Tell me about Carrie Lam," and it gave a long biography. However, after about 5 seconds, the response disappeared to be replaced by generic 'sorry, nothing to see here' blurb.
#Local CFP: we seek pairs of UVA faculty & UVA grad students for funded fellowships on your experimental humanities research that requires high-performance computing resources. Sponsored by SLab & IATH (under the DH Center umbrella partnering our forces!) + UVA's Data Analytics Center +
Entropy levels seem rather high today. (Or do I mean low? Never sure.)
You will also need the correct outfit. I am thinking a Zorro-jedi mash-up that is comfortable and includes pockets.
Holy guacamole! I had no idea school bands were allowed to vibe like this. That red-shirted flute is absolutely rocking out, and even the clarinets are looking kinda cool-adjacent. (Yeah, I messed around with clarinets as a kid. Yeah, they can sound cool, but you WILL look awkward.)
A man jumping, under the words "Make Time For Joy"
Reminder: They're trying to demoralize you, and they're doing a great job of it. Part of resisting is making time for joy despite the attempts to make you feel this is not the time for it. Love your people. Dig the art that speaks to you. Go to the places where life flows into you. You deserve joy.
Hello Bluesky! We're kicking off the DH at Tufts Bluesky account by sharing a few things happening with digital scholarship at Tufts Libraries this spring.

Useful thread, noting that (as usual) this is neither a "the little guy out-thought the big guys, yipee" narrative nor a true open-source offering.
