‘Worst thing I’ve ever seen’: CSIRO slashes climate modelling jobs Australia’s science agency is cutting more than 100 jobs in its Environment Research Unit, which critics say will crush our capacity to predict climate change.

CSIRO have now lost more jobs under the Albanese Governmet than under the Abbott Government.

We have to do better on research funding and backing our scientists.

Robodebt was the great test of Australia’s accountability mechanisms – and they failed The final report into the Centrelink debt recovery process that wreaked havoc on the vulnerable is not the full-stop many wanted. It has not restored the trust that was so fundamentally broken * Follow our Australia news live blog for latest updates * Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast The whistleblower’s message landed just before Christmas. It was 2016, now a distant memory. Continue reading...

How do people with lived experience vs professionals define anorexia recovery?

Lived experience: absence of disordered thoughts
Staff: living well despite residual symptoms

Both agreed psychological markers (not just weight) should define recovery.

Up to $1.4 billion in medical research remains unused under government cap Researchers say securing funding has become increasingly tough, with many left with no choice but to spend a disproportionate amount of time applying for grants.

In 2014 Ross Gittins described the MRFF as an accounting trick (www.smh.com.au/business/med...) to hide deficits rather than fund more medical research. How right he was www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03...

The Great Crime Decline Is Happening All Across the Country Even cities with understaffed police departments have made record gains.

"Few experts endorse the idea that the police “had nothing to do with it🤡"

Wrong.

All of the experts endorse it. Anyone that doesn't endorse it, is not an expert on crime reduction.

Because the data on this has been clear and consistent for ~50+ years.

Yes I thought it was very interesting but I’ve seen a lot of negative reactions already from within the autistic community

I think that’s about right. I felt it in the fact that the plots felt a bit flabby and the books could have used another edit.

Qantas Reduces Sydney – Los Angeles Service in NW26 — AeroRoutes Published at 0200PST / 1000GMT 03MAR26 Qantas during Northern winter 2026/27 season plans service reductions on Sydney – Los Angeles route, reflected in last week’s schedule update. From 25OCT26 t...

Just quietly, Qantas dropping down from daily for Sydney to Los Angeles is a bit of an indicator. I'm probably out of date, but at one point LA was about 25% of Qantas International's revenue. www.aeroroutes.com/eng/260303-q...

The housing affordability 'debate' is so stupid. In a nutshell, negative gearing + CGT discounts accelerate price growth. Reforming it won't make houses cheaper, it will just stop continued runaway growth. Building more houses will make houses cheaper, but you need more construction workers.

Ashes Hollow

If I had to pick a favourite spot on the Long Mynd it would probably be Ashes Hollow. It’s always much quieter than Carding Mill Valley, so I can explore it at a leisurely pace. Add in a bright blue sky, fluffy white clouds and the Quinny Brook - you couldn’t ask for much better! #Shropshire

A careful, quietly devastating review of research on involuntary outpatient treatment. Coercion is being oversold as a way of addressing serious mental illness, and its harms (forcing patients to accept useless or harmful meds & therapies, disempowerment, social disruption, etc) are being downplayed

I kinda hate the "imagine if" gambit, but ffs, imagine if this sort of evidence had been accrued about attacks on synagogues and Jewish members of parliaments. The prime minister and all of officialdom would be bending over backwards (quite rightly) to find the perpetrators.

Is it smarter to have a dumb home? ‘We’ve seen clients unable to flush toilets’ Australia experienced a boom in smart-home technology at the start of the 2020s. Years on, some early adopters are experiencing buyer’s remorse * Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email When the smart home devices Elly Bailey was expecting in the post never showed up at her Gold Coast home, she was frustrated. As a technology reviewer, these products were crucial for her work. When she eventually found the cause, she had to laugh. It wasn’t a sticky-fingered neighbour or a rogue delivery driver causing her to miss parcels, but her smart doorbell – the very thing she’d hoped would prevent missed deliveries, and part of exactly the range of internet-connected devices she was meant to be reviewing. 40% of WA's prison population being indigenous is a massive failure of policing, racism, lazy politics and a reliance on the carceral state. There are hundreds of cascading consequences we should care about. Liam Alexander Hall's life from now on is not one of them

Helpful of this NSW police officer to do away with any pretence of neutrality. Sometimes you just gotta declare loyalty to a foreign state and wear another country’s flag on your uniform.
