Drivers always like to claim they pay for the roads - but this is not true in Canada nor anywhere else as far as I can tell. They pay a bit extra compared to non-drivers (a small bit of the registration fee and some gas taxes go to infrastructure work in some cities inc Montreal).

I never claimed car drivers pay for the roads - it's largely property and income taxes. Reading last year's STM report they seem to claim that all their operations are paid out of fares (so I guess the metro subsidizes the buses) - and I 100% agree that public transport is essential.

But you had just said the STM is fully funded from fares ... of course we all pay for the cost of transportation infrastructure whether we directly use it or not - though it's also fair to debate how this should be apportioned. FWIW that public transit fee is only for people living in Montreal.

To be fair, on the annual registration fee there is an item that is called out as a contribution to public transport in Montreal. I'm happy with that, and the STM's balanced operating budget is insufficient to cover the needed maintenance over the coming years, especially as this has been neglected

Also disappointed to see the CBC labeled him as Secretary of War, when he's still really the Secretary of Defence. Even others in the administration are calling him by that title still.

Tidy is important, more so than ability to cook, though that's also important. Looks, less so IMHO.

Most UK homes have dismal air leakage anyway - something that insulation alone rarely addresses.

Monday is Tutorial Day @dvcon - just waiting for the Practical Tips for Adopting PSS, delivered by Tom Fitzpatrick, to start.

A good chunk of the "dirt" is tyre and brake pad dust.

For me it cost the equivalent of a bag of fish-n-chips every year to keep my British passport up to date. Really there's no excuse for any ex-pat citizen not to.

Your quoted text clearly states that the right to enter the UK is demonstrated via a British Passport or a COE - which is exactly what I had stated. When I enter the UK I use my British passport; when I enter Canada I use my Canadian passport, same as when I enter the US (as no visa waiver is req)

Really ... ยฃ94.50 for 10 years is not expensive. You'd pay more in ETA fees over a comparable period of time now.

The new site has same limitations as the old, except it works 24/7. There's still different payment mechanisms for licences vs registrations (the former can't be done and takes the usual bank processing time). Really it is a complete fiasco still. Oh and sending emails to tell you you have a message

There's no way the initial budget of $600M was realistic for such a simple project - it was already 10X reality from the start. The problem is none of the functionaires have any idea about software development ... and the consultants they use are more than happy to exploit their ignorance.

Fair enough - but at the port of entry, which valid travel document clearly identifies British Nationality? To have left the UK in the first place, a British National would have had to use a British passport - so, really, it's up to them to keep it up to date and valid if they want to return.

Exactly - you always need the passport of the country you're a citizen of when you're entering that country. You can't be a visitor when you're a citizen, clearly.

We have lots of wood, you can't 3D print that ... plus we have plenty of companies who make modular homes out of materials we do have in abundance.

I was going to make a joke about it being sprinkled on Beaver Tailsยฎ ... but in fact they use icing sugar. And I knew you'd be annoyed about the caster/castor error :D

I know many people who have sold their home and moved into rental accommodation designed for older and/or retired people. They then used the equity that was unlocked to enjoy the "go-go" phase of their retirement and still have plenty left to pay for care when they need it in the no-go phase.

Strange - I just tried in a private tab and rejected all cookies - I got a pop up asking for support but was able to close that and continue reading. This was on a laptop though, not phone.

Oh .... I was suggesting using the mandoline/comb combination to cut the frozen peel, not the food processor!

13.01.2026 21:22 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I vaguely remember something about the provincial government is going to be funding Bixi and rolling it out across the province? Maybe that will back-fill the cut from Montreal?

13.01.2026 14:58 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I have a mandoline with a gizmo that looks like a comb (there are 3 with different blade pitches). This sits in front of the main blade and allows thin strips to be produced ... but it's difficult to operate safely (even with a special glove) and especially with floppy items. Maybe freeze the peel?

12.01.2026 20:30 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Can you not use a mandolin? Or does that not produce the right shred?
