How far does environmental DNA travel in coastal bays?
We used biophysical modelling + particle tracking to estimate the transport & detectability of Chironex fleckeri (Australian box jellyfish) eDNA.

Thank you! At an event last night I said "If the word hope doesn't work for you try, 'Never fucking surrender.'" The word hope seems too sunny to a lot of people, but the heart of it as I'm interested in it is: we make the future in the present, if we show up, and that never surrender part.

New IPBES report finds that $220 billion were directed to conservation & restoration of biodiversity in 2023...
yet $7.3 trillion flowed toward subsidies that directly harm nature.

Nadgee Nature Reserve is one of New South Wales' most pristine coastal parks. It has been protected since 1957!
This means the >20k hectare park is home to many threatened species rarely found elsewhere
However, little is known about its estuarine biodiversity due to the challenges accessing them
Update from the field. We achieved a major milestone yesterday by collecting #eDNA samples from Nadgee River
Sampling in Nadgee Nature Reserve is tricky: a 2 hour 4-wheel drive + 20 minute hike through the bush carrying a canoe just to get to the estuary!

This is exactly why I've even stopped trying to apply to ARC grants. There's simply no point...

Really clear article explaining the impossibly long new time-frames for Australian Research Council grants.

When someone says βScientists do not want you to knowβ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They canβt shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

And remember, good people, apparently we need a ridiculous & inefficient "Nature Repair Market" to properly fund conservation, because government simply can't afford to do it. It's shameful this nonsense persists, & far too many, including some that should know better, are willing to perpetuate it.
