Labour Muslim network's Annual Iftar
Really good speech by the mayor of my new city. On the importance of standing up to the far right, the importance of non-Muslim support, and our shared values of justice, fairness and compassion.

π€π€π€Wealth inequality - The subject my newest YouTube deep diveπ€π€π€
Not only do we talk about the 5 levels of wealth, I take aim at the whole personal finance genre. Most of these videos sell a pipe dream that most will never realise, even if they put in the effort.
Want to understand why? π

I do not want to live in this version of Great Britain.
And isn't that exactly the point?
Born here, Mum from here, but seen as not one of us because of where my Dad is from.
We have to challenge the assumption that migration takes from society now. Before mass deportations.
Before it's too late.

James OβBrien reacts to Nigel Farageβs sharia law claim
βIf a taxi driver says something, it doesnβt automatically become trueβ, says James O'Brien. #lbc #reform #jamesobrien #ukpolitics #uknews #debate
Nigel #Farage on #Paracetamol: βWhen it comes to science, I donβt side with anybody...I don't know. You don't know."
Also #NigelFarage: I know Sharia Law is taking over London because "I met taxi drivers that told me that."

The Inquiry - Is it time to copyright your face? - BBC Sounds
Could copyright law protect ourselves from Deepfakes?
An excellent investigation into one of the biggest policy problems of our lifetimes.
The only way individuals can win against AI companies and malign individuals is to give them legal rights that can be enforced.

It really suits the right to hold up Corbyn and Sultana as the people the left should want as their leaders, instead of the many sensible people amongst the left.

Public health shouldnβt be centred around individual behaviour change. It should be focused on changing the wider commercial, social, environmental & ultimately political determinants of health. Behaviour change will naturally come when healthy behaviours are facilitated by those structural changes.

I think the tax reform package we need isn't limited to LVT if that helps!

Disagree. The best wealth tax would be a Land Value Tax, and would only tax pensioners if they are landowners.

I'd favour a Land Value Tax, but call it a Land Ownership Tax.
It deals with the problem of wealth inequality without creating new ones, and is even favour by tax policy wonks like @danneidle.bsky.social

I don't see how we can begin to have an answer without having a serious conversation about how to tax wealth sustainably.
We're the 6th largest economy in the world - I just don't buy that we lack the means.

In the media age, using salience of threat as a marker of real danger is not a great strategy.

@privateeyenews.bsky.social reported that Reform had spent Β£40k on Facebook ads pushing this - more than Labour and Tories combined.
Journalists would do more for public debate if they asked where that money is coming from, rather than singling Labour out.

Before this narrative solidifies, here's an important fact that would change the story for most people:
Reform spent Β£40,000 on Facebook ads pushing their narrative this summer.
That's more than Labour & Tories COMBINED.

Business denies link to arms firm after attack by pro-Palestine group
Palestine Action says it carried out attack in which windows were smashed and claims company has links to Israeli arms firm
I wonder how many who say they support Palestine Action are in support of its previous stunts?
I support the innocent people of Gaza, but not the smashing up Jewish-owned businesses, an act which echoes 1930s Germany in terrifying ways.

If you're a reporter, please stop referring to RFK Jr and his cronies as "vaccine skeptics." They're not skeptical. Skepticism would be fine. Skeptics look at evidence and can be persuaded.
These people are extremist anti-vaccine cranks, and that's how news organizations should describe them.

When is the GMC finally going to strike Malhotra off?
I first noticed him on Diary of a CEO and was horrified then. He came across as someone so traumatised by the avoidable death of his father that he's lost his grip on reality.
Ironic that so many other deaths are risked by his misinformation.

I admire your optimism, but I sense you might not understand the implications of an animal reservoir.
For example, birds are the animal reservoir for flu - to eradicate it you would need to vaccinate every bird on the planet. It's just not feasible with current technology.

That's alarming. But not surprising.
Surely some marketing whizz knows what you have to do to get people to put something extraordinarily helpful into your body.
If they can make folks rub smelly chemicals into their face in creams or make-up I refuse to believe they can't do it with this.

The only ending for a pandemic that was allowed to spread through the population is for it to forever circulate in the population.
And thanks to large animal reservoirs, we will never now eradicate it.
We've had so many public health successes in my lifetime, but this reminds us we need better.

Reminder that vaccines work.
I can't help but think a lot of vaccine scepticism is down to branding issues.
Here's the argument:
If someone were to set up a company (call it NaturVax) selling oral vaccine rather than injections I think vaccine scepticism would be a lot less cool.
