The tuberculosis sanatorium in Vífilsstaðir included a dairy farm. The photos from this week are all of a large cowshed and barn that is on the grounds there. It was built in 1916 and operated until 1974.

My great-grandmother caught tuberculosis before the advent of antibiotics. According to the family lore, a ghost cured her while she was seeing a psychic healer. Whether that's true or not, she did live to be 98 years old.

The photos I've posted lately are all from Vífilsstaðir, which opened in 1910 as a tuberculosis sanatorium and is now a nursing home. While the main building is in decent condition, the surrounding structures are not.

I'm honestly not sure. This photo was taken when my grandfather went on a trip to Flateyri in the 1950s. I did wonder if it might have been taken on the way there. There's nothing written on the slide so it's hard to say.

A marching band gathers on Austurvöllur on June 17th, most likely sometime in the 1960s. It seems like not long ago, many houses in downtown Reykjavik were in a state of disrepair, like the house in the back.
