That pitcher of beer on the table! Do they have their own tap system at home, or did they just pour lots of beer bottles into one pitcher just for presentation?

It has been a nice few days of pubbing around Sheffield and the Peak District.

While searching for something entirely different, I came across this photo of Mönchsambacher brewery from before 1938 (i.e. before it was owned by the Zehendner family, the current owners).

Honestly, I expected it to fail at the time, but was then positively surprised how quickly secondary fermentation kicked off. I assume the Brett in there was just pretty sturdy.

A few years ago, I added the sediment of two Boon Gueuze bottles to a fermenter of Old Ale for secondary fermentation, and it came out lovely and complex. That was inspired by @brewhenry.bsky.social and his talks about Prize Old Ale.

Hi, the future here, for graphics cards you pretty much nailed it, but your hard disk capacity estimate was too optimistic.

Dittsche.

Improv comedy situated in a snack bar in Hamburg. Probably not the easiest to understand (lots of Hamburg dialect and other colloquialisms). Used to be filmed and broadcast live. Sometimes quite absurd but my kind of humour. You should be able to find episodes on YouTube.

Just as a side note, describing unhopped beer does not seem to be a new problem. I recently found this in an 18th century Czech-Latin-German dictionary, and they needed a lot of words to describe unhopped English beer, no matter which language.

Large stainless steel bowl of fresh hops

East Kent Golding hops harvest. First time for these bines. 469g wet so should be about 79-94g once dehydrated

I have neglected my hops this year while busy with the new job. One lesson is to always cut new bamboo for my poles. The don’t hold up in the windy and wet weather a second year

When did the game of darts become associated with pubs? We all know that in the UK if you want to play darts you head to the pub. But where did this association between pubs and darts begin?

BLOG POST: Dartboards and pubs go together, everyone knows that. But how long has that been the case? And, actually, how old is darts as a game? 🍺🍻

It's the same playbook as the Tories, who put Priti Patel and Suella Braverman in positions of cruelty over migrants, given their respective families' backgrounds as Indian immigrants in Uganda, Kenya or Mauritia, and later the UK.

When travelling to Munich for work, I brought my own Punjana tea bags because they are my favourite, but the Munich tap water makes the tea just shite. Unfortunately our office managers don't seem to care (we rent individual rooms), so all the water is unfiltered, and even the coffee is just horrid.

Where things stand with the Department of War A statement from Dario Amodei

I think one of the most staggering industry shifts in my 16 years as a tech reporter is that it’s not become a question of “should our product help the government kill and/or surveil people?” but “to what extent?”

So Philip Glass just joined TikTok. He only has like 4 posts and they’re simply him in what I assume is his living room playing the piano. First comment on one I saw was “your piano is too close to the fireplace, you’ll dry it out” and if that’s not the internet in a nutshell I don’t know what is.

The craft beer boom is over. These new breweries find hope in staying small. A new crop of craft brewery owners believe that quality beer is a must, but it’s everything else — hospitality, food, trivia nights — that will decide their fate.

Roughly 200 breweries are expected to open across the US this year. Who opens a brewery in 2026?

I talked to a few of the entrepreneurs behind them: wapo.st/4l336RS

So who knows. As I witness with a previous employer that filed for insolvency in late 2022, the whole process can be agonisingly slow.

BrewDog Berlin filed for insolvency last Friday. I've not read anything saying that BrewDog sale included BrewDog in Germany or any of its assets. The provisional insolvency administrator might negotiate a deal with someone, but I've not even seen the official insolvency bulletin for BrewDog.

The American journey, from German lagers to citra-hopped IPAs YouTube video by Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET)

If you missed my talk on American beer culture last week, here’s the video. We discussed how German immigrants turned the U.S. into a beer country, and then how during the craft era Americans invented a new way of thinking about and brewing hoppy ales.

A simple German woodcutting from 1490 showing a Renaissance dude on the right who is having a lower back spasm so bad his right shoe was blown clean off. On the left is a witch (“eine Hexe") with a bow and arrow who just shot him in the back. (Otherwise, why would his back hurt? Hexenschuss!) The engraving is credited to Johann Zainer as was taken from the book “Tractatus von den bösen weibern, die man hexen nennt,” or “Treatise on evil women, who are called witches,“ by Ulrich Molitor.

The Czech word for lower back pain or lumbago is hexenšus, which is borrowed from a German word, Hexenschuss.
The first time I heard it I was like, “Oh, like a witch just shot you in the back? That’s what you think happened?”
Dear reader, at one point, that’s exactly what they thought.
