Do you consider yourself a birber or a birder?

What are people's favorite autoencoders for dimensionality reduction in spatial data? Toying with a simple CNN architecture right now... #MLSky #StatsSky #GISchat

This new rest stop is nice but I feel like I'm at a McDonald's Ski Lodge.

@straythought.bsky.social iNaturalist does train their models on user-uploaded data, so it could help with that. Lots of other models train on iNat data too; I have read Google Lens does. And I know some ecology studies that have used iNat data, though often they'll exclude cultivated observations.

Illustrated image divided into four panels, each showing a head of a bat with a text label. Top left: little guy, a regular looking back with a dark face and light colored fur, top right: little guy deluxe, a bat with a mask and large ears alongside a bat with a leaf shaped nose, bottom left: what is even going on here, a visored bat with a large forehead next to a bat with a large, wrinkly nose, bottom right: o hi doggie, a fruit bat with its tongue sticking out.

Contrary to popular belief, there are only four kinds of bats.

Simple painting of a blue octopus on a white background with its legs spread to fill the page. Red text below reads, "I shall arrange myself thus". Artist is David Shrigley

I don't think David Shrigley is on here but this is one of his paintings. I think about it a lot and say this out loud myself sometimes when I sit down

Our #Nudivember species today is Eubranchus inabai, a small nudibranch found in the western Pacific from Japan down to Australia.

Eubranchus species are often VERY small, think grain of uncooked rice small. They can be very hard to find. This one ranges from about 5-12mm or so in size.
