The Thatcher years were appalling, she stripped people of their humanity.
I maintain that she was the worst PM in my lifetime (52 years) because her policies are responsible for the cost of greed crisis we all struggle with. Sure Johnson, Truss et al were bad but Thatcher was worse.

I was saying the same thing to a friend yesterday. Itβs not a struggle to know Fiona Bruceβs views.
Who made the lamentable decision to make her host of #bbcqt? Sheβs a presenter not a journalist. Wouldnβt surprise me if Robbie Gibb or one of his acolytes was involved.

Itβs funny that the billionaire press doesnβt seem at all interested in the Epstein circleβs desire to overthrow democracy!!

I was about 10/11 at the time and remember being utterly disgusted with them not supporting their fellow miners.

Interesting, I hadnβt thought of that although I do remember members of Tβs admin, and those close to him, suggesting they didnβt like him according to various right wing media outlets (or maybe those outlets didnβt like him so made it up?)
Of course, that could have also been performative.

Why the hell did Starmer pick Mandelson? The latest mug on the media round had no idea | John Crace
Nick Thomas-Symonds unravelled under barrage of questions β as PM instead bored some mothers and babies in Belfast
I admit to not knowing how these things work, however, as it was Starmerβs (read McSweeneyβs) appalling judgement, why didnβt he show a bit of backbone, a bit of spine and do the morning media round himself?
Instead Nick Thomas-Symonds took the brickbats.

Starmer, in his speech at McSweeneyβs leaving do, claimed that McSweeney was the most talented political strategist in the country and probably the world. Not looking like that now.
Is Starmer that much of a fool? Itβs like having Johnson back.
Oh, but but Starmer has apologised.

Sarah Sackman is no better than Trump who made the risible claim that the Iranians had somehow obtained a Tomahawk missile and done it to themselves.
SS essentially said tough luck, this is what happens but anyway itβs Iranβs fault for being attacked.

Youβre absolutely right. I think Andy Burnham would have been perfect - and yesterday his strong criticism of the Duchy of Lancaster shows that heβs not scared to go against the status quo.
That really leaves Streeting, Mahmood and Angela Rayner all of whom have limitations.

I also think Starmer has reached the point of no return and should seriously consider resigning. He is either too weak to stop this or he agrees with Mahmoodβs draconian approach to migration.
As well as being morally bankrupt, govt are refusing to see that these policies will cost us big sums.

This report in the Nerve posted by @georgemonbiot.bsky.social is staggering. The abuse of young girls is depraved, however, the control these men surrounding Epstein and their attempts to circumvent democracy is being largely ignored.

So Badenoch, Farage and Blair think the Iran war is a great idea? Hmm β¦ | John Crace
Kemi may be all in favour, but at least economic realpolitik is forcing her to take a slightly different tack
I know this sketch from John Crace was posted yesterday, however, it feels very very out of date today after both Badenochβs and Farageβs volte face today!

Unfortunately, the front benches of Labour, Reform and the Tories are a little bit too cosy and socialise with each other at events like the Spectator summer party so I donβt hold out much hope. I doubt backbenchers would have the proof unfortunately.

I donβt think heβs as bad as Johnson but he certainly isnβt who he claims he is. The freebies scandal illustrates this, after claiming that he was in politics for public service, and it got progressively worse.

Moreover, allowing the likes of Sarah Pochin, who is fed up of seeing black people in adverts, the power to hand out 2 year sentences is mind bogglingly alarming.
Juries do not delay trials, Serco does, the state of our courts does. This is not about the rights of victims and Phillips knows this.

I donβt doubt the fact that sheβs a victim yet using it as a reason for people to dismantle our human rights is reprehensible.

1. The courts backlog is not due to juries and 2. Victims do not receive justice from wrongful convictions and Jess Phillips knows this.

I really look forward to this programme because youβre a very fair and very balanced journalist so it wonβt be a hit job. It will be interesting to see why Starmer is so unpopular when he clearly isnβt the worst PM in recent history.

I think it will be a good programme because Lewis Goodall is an excellent journalist and will look at all the reasons Starmer has fallen so far so quickly - his actions vs the actions of the press/media barons, etc.
Whilst I find the govt deeply disappointing, they are far from being the worst.
