Just to show how stupid this was, a project on Harriet Beecher Stowe's religious writing got flagged as DEI.

Nathan Cavanaugh Deposition in ACLS-AHA-MLA Lawsuit About the NEH, Part 1 of 6 YouTube video by American Historical Association

Honestly I need historians to be the plaintiffs in every case I cover because if they make it to discovery you just KNOW those primary sources are going public.

Exhibit A: The American Historical Association uploading video depos of the DOGE bros to YouTube.

FUNERAL STELE OF AURELIA
ARTEMIS
Early Byzantine (Akhmim, Egypt), 4th century
This stele (funerary monument) commemorates the death of a noble woman named in the Greek inscription: "Aurelia Artemis, daughter of Pasion, the sweetest, beyond comparison above all, farewell." The use of costly, imported marble and the woman's elaborate dress suggest that she came from a wealthy family. The use of a Greek inscription, as well as the woman's pose, point to a Greek family, possibly Christian, living in southern Egypt.
Marble, with plaster and paint if.2, acquired by Henry Walters, 1923

In case you wondered where the turn of phrase “red letter day” came from, it’s from Roman fasti (festival calendars). Romans loved rubricating—using red to emphasize a letter—as this epitaph for Aurelia Artemis, from Akhmim, (Roman Egypt), 4thC CE (Walters Art Museum) illustrates.

In 1983, Ruth Schwartz Cowan published a book called More Work for Mother where she argued that modern household tech (washing machines/vacuums) didn't reduce women's housework time, it just raised standards of domesticity. Household work is never shortened by tech & you can extrapolate that out.

This is what historians do: Understand the world of the past to explain not only what historical figures thought but *how*: subtleties of meaning, unspoken assumptions. It requires much more than processing data. Putting GW in a t-shirt certainly makes him contemporary—which instantly destroys him.

“Death by Lightning” fans on @netflix.com: James Garfield became President of the United States on 3/4/1881. Interested in how he came to the presidency?

If only there were some excellent, peer-reviewed book that explained it.

I appreciate that a post claiming AI can “research” better than professional scholars is evolving into a conversation about the triumphs and affirmation of becoming an expert in your field. It’s almost like the process is just as important as the product.

I would argue that any professional working within a body knowledge that seeks to understand the human experience/condition who offloads their “research” to a machine has abandoned all credibility in contributing value to that body of knowledge.

Makes me wonder if anyone who has ever held any position that generated original content for public consumption will have to start writing language into their wills regarding AI to safeguard against this disgusting abuse of consent.

the owners will never agree to opening the books, which will be a key factor in why a cap/floor system won't work. they wouldn't put both OIBDA (operating income before depreciation and amortization) and RDA (Roster Depreciation Allowance) numbers out there. they have a lot of loopholes in place.
